TOD - other than trips to Indianapolis to visit my grandmother, the first real trip I remember is Washington, DC, in the fall of 1957. My dad had been sent there on business and my mother, sister, and I drove to join him for a vacation at the conclusion of his assignment. It was quite daring, in the late '50s, for a woman and daughters to travel alone like that, especially making an overnight stop and staying in a motel. It was also quite daring for our parents to take us out of school for a week - I was in first grade and my sister was in high school.
My mother had a distant cousin, Beulah, who was married to a distinguished gentleman who worked for Riggs National Bank. We stayed with them and did a lot of sightseeing. Beulah threw a sparkling party in my parents' honor, with many sophisticated guests and a lot of champagne.
