Today, I am going down to the Red Wind Casino for lunch and a little gaming.  My sister, brother-in-law, and our friend Carole are going down for a few hours.  It is about a half hour drive from Tacoma, towards DR George's part of the Puget Sound.

TOD

My family always went away for a week’s vacation during the summer, usually to the Jersey shore. The one exception was a lovely week at Saylors lake in the Poconos:

I remember riding swan shaped paddle boats around the lake and also sighting my first chipmunk while I was hunting blueberries.

My Aunt and Uncle took me on a road trip to Ithaca NY to visit their son at Cornell

The first non-family journey was a church day bus trip to NYC to see Wonderful Town.

Soon after I went with a school chum and his Mother, by train, to spend a week end in NYC with an Aunt. (We all saw Can-Can on that trip)

Then there was the time my Scout Master took me, by train, to spend a weekend in Boston (and yes we did).

During my sophomore year in high school, the family (now 5 of us) took a two week winter car trip to Sarasota Florida. (Florida was my Mon’s idea, Sarasota was mine – the Circus winters there!). This was 1954 and there were no interstates or fancy motels – you spent the night in private B&Bs or tiny road side cabins. I remember my first southern meal in a B&B in NC. There I was introduced to the prevailing southern ethos “Nigras are just like horses: break ‘em young, train them well and they well be of good service” – advice offered by our gentile southern hostess over our morning grits.

I also had a complete course in Modern American Poetry – the road side Burma Shave ads.

I also remember stocking up on fireworks in GA – a purchase which was neither Safe nor Sane!

On my first morning in Sarasota our hostess (from whom we were renting two rooms) asked me if I liked grapefruit. I said, yes, if it has honey on it. She said her grapefruit needed no honey and proceeded to the backyard and picked a very rotten looking (all brown) fruit from the tree. She cut open the fruit and served it up – tree ripened and sugar sweet!

Still in High School, I took my first Naval Reserve cruise – a summer jaunt to Provincetown MA (What ever were they thinking!) You can imagine the welcome a shipload of young sailors received.)

My first plane ride was when Annapolis sent me to Boston to represent them in a Forensics competition.

Other college years travels included: Montreal; ,Lisbon, Portugal; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Hamburg, Germany.

Hello, m'dears!

I'm in LA, and BK is on his way to NY!! Wouldn't you just guess... I'm here for a big weekend at the theatre for which I'm managing director - big weekend - 4, count 'em, 4 different shows colliding. The LA premiere of Stop Kiss in repertory with the world premiere of henry Murray's incredible Treefall, and late-night offerings: Shorts and Sweets, and the monthly Rant and Rave on Monday night... I'm sorking front of house for alla them. I'll love seeing these plays and being among my pals.

I'm staying at my sister Rikki's son's house in Playa Vista -- can you spell Resort Living??? Yipes - I feel very VIP. Rented a little car at LAX through Expedia.com - buzzed out to Northridge to my storage locker to get my keyboard, then to Rikki's last night for dinner, then slept like a dead person here in this wondrously cozy bed. Now I'm running out to Sherman Oaks to give a piano lesson, then back to storage to drop off my keyboard, then dress to run the house for 2 shows, then crash again, then a board meeting in the AM, then run house for the matinee tomorrow... I think I have a couple of hours free tomorrow night - or not - and Monday afternoon... I'm outa here Tuesday morning, back to the idyllic life in the forest - was ever ol' gal more schizophrenic???

It's not so hot here today but it's horribly humid. We just came back from an errand and I turned on the AC. I can't stand it. I took a shower and now I'm in the bedroom in the cool air. It looks like it may rain again (it did this morning).

I'm tired of the late arriving summer weather. I want fall!!!

OPERA STAR RUSHED TO HOSPITAL AFTER FALLING OFF STAGE INTO ORCHESTRA PIT

An opera singer was rushed to the hospital after tumbling into an orchestra pit during a performance at a British festival.
Ana Maria Martinez, a native Puerto Rican, suffered minor injuries in the accident while playing the title role in Rusalka at the world-renowned venue in East Sussex, Great Britain.

A Glyndebourne Festival spokeswoman said she was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure but discharged after being checked over by an orthopedic surgeon.

No - it does not stand alone, it is a thread throughout the section titled "The Scouting Years" - which is not available for purchase.
