TOD:   I'm sort of in DR Druxy's situation....simply could not recall with any accuracy "when" I had my first hot dog or hamburger.  I can't remember the having of one or the other as being anything other than normal.  My dad was a first-rate BBQ-er....nothing ever came out wrong.  He could cook up meats that would have your mouth watering for days afterward just from the memory of how great they tasted.

When we weren't eating burgers at home, or at the lake (Clark Hill Reservoir in southwest SC), I would get one wherever we ate out...usually at Wade's Diner in Johnston SC.

My dad ran a Texaco station in Johnston for a number of years and he sold hot dogs there, too.  My mom made chili and diced onions, and folks would stop from all over to have one of those steamed dogs on a bun with onions, mustard, relish and chili.  Those were GOOD dogs!  Through the years, my dad would "hear of a great place for hot dogs" and we would go as a family on a late Sunday afternoon for an early supper.   Almost always, those hot dogs were worth all the trouble of finding them.

There is a hot dog stand about a quarter-mile from my office where I can get a hot dog with chili, onions and mustard, and they're pretty great-tasting, but I'm at that point in my life when I don't "NEED" to be eating hot dogs and the like.  But an occasional "taste" suits me just fine.

For burgers, I have to agree with DR MattH that nothing tastes better than a Burger King Whopper.  I've had great burgers made at home (and have made same, myself), but there is something about the taste of a Whopper that I've never replicated.  And when I gots to have one, I simply gots to have one!!!

I recall the first Whopper I ever ate.  This was in South Carolina in the late 1960s, and at that time, a Whopper all the way included slaw.  And it wasn't just local to SC, 'cause I recall being in the Washington DC area and going to a Burger King with some friends and everyone ordering with slaw or without slaw.  I wasn't particularly partial to the slaw, personally, and this was the first time I'd ever thought about ordering one without.  I did so, and the taste was HEAVEN!

Now, of course, I wish I could try another one WITH slaw.  So far as I know, they dropped the slaw from the all-the-way Whopper long ago.

My DH is from Chicago, so he was always looking for a real Chicago Hot Dog. He found a place in central Phoenix. I usually watch him eat one, since the fat level is so high in a good hot dog.

P.S. to my TOD memory:  My dad suffered a stroke in 1990 when he and my mom were living in Aaron's Creek, VA, where they had bought a two-story colonial in early 1989 from my Uncle Graham and Aunt Fanny, who were moving to Roanoke to live near their oldest daughter.  The house was on two acres of farm land my uncle maintained (he kept 50 acres of pasture land on either side of this parcel) and included an older house (where my uncle was born) a smokehouse, a stable, several storage out-buildings, including a barn.  My folks had retired there in the summer of 1989 and their goals were to farm the land in spring and summer and then to travel in the fall and late winter.  They did plenty of farming, I have to say.  I visited them from Italy in August and September 1989 when I was attending a Broadcast Manager's Course at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN.  I spent two weeks with them before going to my month-long course, and I had a couple of long weekends during which I went back to be with them.  They worked really hard with a half-acre plot of garden, and they put me to work helping prep some of the vegetables for canning.

When my dad had his stroke, he was driving a tractor (from a farm where he'd bought it at auction) to my Uncle John's house.  My uncle saw him first and remarked that my dad looked "sorta strange".  When my dad arrived, everyone was outside to meet him and he told them, "That tractor 'liked to' kick my butt."  I think my Aunt Frances thought he'd had sunstroke and called medics.  He was rushed to a local hospital where my mom learned he'd had a terrible stroke.  The hospital gave him 24 hours to live.  My mom called my cousin Butch, who is an M.D.,  for a reference to specialists.  Several hours later, my dad was med-evaced to a Duke Universtiy specialty unit in Durham NC.  They saved his life.

There's a point related to the TOD, I swear it, and it's not all grim.  You have to learn how to communicate all over again when a stroke robs you of speech.  My dad worked hard but everything wouldn't come back.  So, when he was trying to say something, he'd often speak gibberish which, to me, sounded like he was improvising words that were as close to what he wanted to say as possible.

Bringing my tales about hot dogs and hamburgers as full circle as I can regarding my dad, there was a day when my mom was taking my dad to his doctor for a checkup.  He was partially ambulatory by then (required a walker to get about) and the visit was short.   My mom, facing the drive back home and preparing lunch for them both, suggested they might stop and get something to eat.  My dad nodded enthusiastically.  My mom asked him what he'd like.  He struggled a bit...and my mom suggested several things, but my dad shook his head "no" to those suggestions.  After a few moments, my mom asked him if he couldn't give her any kind of idea of what he was wanting.  He looked at her and said, "Hooly-doolies".

My mom, amused and puzzled, suddenly asked: "Do you mean hot dogs"?  My dad's face lit up, and off they went for hot dogs.  My mom said they were the best she'd tasted in a long time.

Now, I can't think of "hot dogs" wiithout thinking first of "hooly-doolies".

Nice story, DR Ron Pulliam!

And if you eat them on consecrated ground, do they become "Holy Doolies?"

Those who've read the Kritzer books know that my memory is pretty sharp about the whens and wheres of things - therefore, while I may have had a hot dog or hamburger at home (which I don't really count), my first restaurant or counter dog and burger is easy - burger would be Kentucky Boys on the corner of Sherbourne and Pico (then - now it's a funeral parlor - same building), and hot dog would be an Orange Julius stand at the corner of Pico and Robertson, next to a newsstand where I bought my first MAD magazine.  I can taste both as if it were yesterday.

I also liked The Apple Pan (still there), Fosters Freeze burgers (one or two still around), Scot's (next to the Picwood Theater at Westwood and Pico), Hody's, and later, McDonald's and Jack In The Box and Bob's Big Boy.  In the 70s, hot dogs were always at The Wiener Factory in Sherman Oaks, and I would eat burgers at all the fast-food jernts as well as the Hamlet and other slightly more upscale places.

Growing up in Greenville SC, the one place we normally went for hot dogs was a drive-in called Hinton's.  I can't think of Hinton's without thinking of late afternoons-early evenings because the light of day was always waning whenever we went to Hinton's, and I can visualize the white and blue neon lights of the signs there getting brighter as the light of day diminished.

My boss has returned from her vacation in Massachusetts (her second this year).  She has been gone the entire month of August (except for today), and there is much on her desk requiring attention, including ALL my vacation requests through the end of the year!  Those are on top, naturally!

Did Scott's become a See's candy?  I wish I could remember the name of the ice cream in the back of the See's Candy store.  They had the best English Toffee ice cream-ever.  Later See's expanded and took over their space.

I miss the Picwood Theater :(

Jrand, Bank Shot will be around for a little while, and even if it sells out and you ultimately want one, I'll have emergency copies.
