Nice chair DR Ben.  I look forward to seeing them with the matching decor in your home.

Soon after we moved to Tacoma, when I was five, we discoved a little hamburger stand on South Tacoma Way called Jolly Jack's.  They were the first place I ever saw that served charcoal-broiled burgers (this was 1955 or 56).

When I was young my favorite hot dog, and the only one I would eat, was from the snack bar at Sear's.

Keep your self-righteous fingers off my processed food

By demanding we all pay more to fund their agendas in these harsh economic times, foodie snobs and lefty social critics may as well tell us to eat artisanal cake.
By Charlotte Allen
August 30, 2009

Just in time for the worst economic downturn since the Depression, here comes a new crop of social critics to inform us that we're actually spending too little for the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the furniture we sit on and the gasoline that runs our automobiles.

Never mind that U.S. job losses these days range from 200,000 to 500,000 a month, that foreclosures are up 32% over this time last year and that people are re-learning how to clip newspaper coupons so as to save at the supermarket. Dire economic circumstances don't seem to faze these spending enthusiasts, who scold us for shopping at supermarkets instead of at farmer's markets, where a loaf of "artisanal" (and also "sustainable") rye bread sells for $8, ice cream for $6 a cup and organic tomatoes go for $4 a pound.

The latest cheerleader for higher prices is Ellen Ruppel Shell, a professor of science journalism at Boston University who has just published a book titled "Cheap." It's not a guide to bargain-hunting. The theme of Shell's book, subtitled "The High Cost of Discount Culture," is "America's dangerous liaison with Cheap."

Shell's argument goes like this: Shopping at discount stores, factory outlets and, of course, Wal-Mart (no work of social criticism is complete without a drive-by shooting aimed at that chain) exploits Chinese factory workers (who would much rather be back on the collective farm wearing their Mao suits) and degrades the environment because much of the low-price junk wears out and ends up in landfills.

Even IKEA comes in for a drubbing in Shell's book. Yes, the Swedish chain's inexpensive, assemble-yourself furniture may look tasteful, but behind every Billy bookcase lies a gruesome tale (in Shell's view) of Siberian forests ravaged for all that pine veneer and gallons of fossil fuel burned by couples motoring to IKEA's remote store locations, strategically chosen for their rock-bottom land values. Most damaging of all, says Shell, is the cost to America's soul.

Echoing Waters was her fellow Berkeley food guru, Michael Pollan, professor of science journalism (a hot field for social critics, obviously) at UC Berkeley. Pollan (no relation to Robert Pollin) is the author of the best-selling "Omnivore's Dilemma" and coiner of the mantra "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants" that is on the lips of every foodie from Bainbridge Island to Martha's Vineyard. Pollan too rejoiced at the idea of skyrocketing prices for groceries, hoping they might "level the playing field for sustainable food that doesn't rely on fossil fuels."

Pollan is a "locavore," one of those people who believe that in order to be truly ethical, you should eat only foods grown or killed within your line of sight (for me, that would be my neighbor's cat).

So, George, the next time your sister wants help putting together the IKEA, tell her you can't - it's against your religion.

I don't know at what Farmer's Market the writer shops, but the quoted prices are twice what we pay at our Farmer's Market in Rehoboth. And the Farmer's Market vine ripened locally grown tomatoes are cheaper than those at the supermarket!

Here is the Hibiscus chair from Pier One.

We have two of them and the couch is now gone. We have more room, having also taken away an end table. It looks very nice and comfy.

Does anyone know where Ben can get a Kitten to share his chair?

I've done all I can do in terms of damage control, and I think we'll be okay for Wednesday.  Been watching Adam 12 to calm down.  The current episode just had a wonderful shot on Riverside in Burbank and there were Paty's and Marie Callender's just as they are today.

Jane,

If you see something like this on your trail - pick it up; it sells for $85/ounce in good food stores.

Ginny, they don't have much but what was there was nice. I was surprised also that they had things besides wicker. They are having an end of season sale so you may find a good deal. I don't know how delivery is outside of the city but it was quick and easy for us.

We are back from DR Elmore's brothers' neighborhood, where we returned the redneck pickup truck to our niece (John's middle daughter) and her husband.  Rob has gone back to Cincinnati to crash on his friend's couch because he has to work at 7am the next two mornings.  He'll be home for good Wednesday evening.

Don't forget about shipping...if you don't buy it at a store and take it home yourself!  My supervisor was telling me just this afternoon that he and his wife were looking for a chest of drawers for their daughter.  They found one on Ikea's website that they liked for $149.  To have it shipped from a store to their house in Montesano would cost ANOTHER $279!!! :o

They found a similar item at overstock.com for about $130 and FREE SHIPPING!!

They're still looking around for something, but if they really want the Ikea drawers, they can certainly go to the store and pick it up themselves for a hell of a lot less than $279. :-\
