As for the rest of the day, I have last night's CASTLE to watch while I eat lunch. I will check out the next Brett/SHERLOCK HOLMES case. I will likely watch MANHUNTER on Blu-ray this afternoon, too. If not that, then something on HD-DVD. So many choices....

As for TOD:

My first TV was an RCA color 19" portable which I bought for my bedroom when I moved back in with my parents after college while I was going to graduate school and working full-time as a teacher. By then, our tastes in TV watching were so different that we couldn't agree on anything to watch, so I watched in my bedroom most nights after I finished my work.

When I moved to my first apartment, I bought a combination stereo record player/cassette player/radio with two speakers. I left my stereo record player at home for my parents to use.

Of course, a VCR was a major purchase back then since they were so new. I think I paid $900 for my first one which was a major chunk of change. I was barely making that much per month teaching. Fortunately, I had a second job reviewing movies for a local newspaper syndicate, and I had income from stock dividends which allowed to to have such an extravagance.

In other news...

It's been quite "fun" reading the reviews of the new production of Tosca that opened at The Metropolitan Opera last night...

Here's the slug from the New York Times:

"The Swiss-born director Luc Bondy was showered with boos during his final bows as the Met opened its season on Monday night with a new production of Puccini’s “Tosca.”"

And Howard Kissel in the New York Daily News calls it "unspeakable".

There are some new shows debuting tonight on network TV:

NCIS: LA

THE GOOD WIFE on CBS

THE FORGOTTEN on ABC after another two hour DANCING WITH THE STARS.

I'm eager to see the season seven premiere of NCIS which has quickly become (along with BONES, CASTLE, and THE MENTALIST) among my favorite shows right now on network TV.

I saw him and his partner play many, many times during my youth. My aunt dearly loved them, had many of their albums, and when my uncle didn't want to se them yet again, I'd be selected to go. Of course, I enjoyed them very much, too, so I always looked forward to seeing them again.

She also had the same kind of crush on Leonard Bernstein (join the club), and we went to see him every time he came to town, too.

In a previous life I worked with Teicher's nephew at a lawfirm.  He was quite an accomplished sax player.

bk, does you DishTV/DirectTV (I forget which you have) offer the AMC-HD channel?

As you know watching the Blu-rays, the HD versions are SO much more enjoyable. I watched the first season in SD and then got to review the first season on Blu-ray where my eyes were open to how lush and beautiful it looked. I could NEVER go back to SD now with the show.

It comes as no surprise to anyone here since I talk about it all the time, but I really am spoiled about watching shows in high definition now. Anything else, especially on standard def TV, looks subpar. DVDs are somewhat different since a good Blu-ray player can upconvert a well made DVD to near-HD appearance (those Holmes stories I'm watching now look fantastic upconverted). But it PAINS me to see PROJECT RUNWAY every week since there's no Lifetime-HD on my cable service (we do have LIFETIME MOVIES-HD, but that's a different animal entirely.)

Well, I must head down now and do more of my stretching exercises for my rehab, and then I should be ready to watch another Holmes adventure before starting in on lunch preparation.

The big event on my agenda for today is my semi-annual dental check-up.  They just called from the office to say that the dentist I usually see is out sick and to ask if I wanted to see his associate or to reschedule.  As long as Sharon, they hygienist, is there to do my cleaning, I really don't care which dentist I see.  We're good to go.

TOD:

First tv I bought myself - a Panasonic 19" color portable!  Worked for many years.  It had a great picture and was very easy to tune.  Antenna of course.

First record player - was a nice one, don't remember the brand.  One piece stereo with a drop down turntable in the center.....coral and black.  It was an automatic turntable that allowed me to play several records and once which was wonderful.

Tape Recorder - a small reel to reel that ran on batteries.  I also recorded television shows to listen to later.....

After hearing everyone here talk about Mad Men and watching Oprah yesterday, I've decided that I need to watch it, too.  There's a waiting list a mile long at the library for Season 1, so I think I'll ask Richard to put it on our Netflix list.

HA!  Won't Richard be surprised to find that I added Seasons 1 and 2 of Mad Men to our Netflix all by myself!  And moved Season 1, Disc 1 to the top of the list!

Rob and I finally gave in to the humidity.  We've closed the windows and turned on the AC.  Now maybe the kitchen chairs won't stick to the floor!

DR Elmore3003....here's a local article about the current San Francisco run of SOUTH PACIFIC in which one Rod Gilfry is starring as Emile.

I'm seeing the show Saturday, October 2.

I plan on watching the new series FLASH FORWARD. Although it's on the same time as SURVIVOR. So i'll record it.

I don't think anybody here has seen it yet. But it's supposed to be one of the must see new shows. It sounds interesting.

And because Thursday has a 2 hour GREY's ANATOMY, the canadian station CTV is showing the season premiere of THE MENTALIST tonight!

I have a version of this somewhere that is very much like Jonathan and Darlene's style. DR Kerry has heard it.
