JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG is also one of my favorite films.

I think it was the first MAJOR movie to deal directly with the Holocaust.  Unfortunately, it came out the same year as WEST SIDE STORY, which swept the Oscars.  JUDGMENT only won awards for Actor (Schell) and Screenplay (Mann).

Frankly, I think that Montgomery Clift was robbed when the Supporting Actor Award went to George Chakiris.  The award was for "Best Supporting Actor," not "Best Supporting Dancer".

It's no secret that Laurence Olivier was originally set to do the Lancaster role.  That would have been an interesting piece of casting.

I'm not a big Streisand fan, but I love the haunting way she sings "With One Look" from SUNSET BLVD.

TOD:

It's a toughie, but for just one track?  I'll go with "He Touched Me" from Drat, the Cat! for its visceral vocal excitement.  Followed closely by "That Face" from the end of the medley in her television special Color Me Barbra.

And I can't leave out the eleven o'clock torch number from the OCR of Funny Girl, "The Music That Makes Me Dance."

Good morning!

Another cool morning, another temperate afternoon. Life couldn't get much better than this, and I'm SO glad my health problems are mostly behind me so I can enjoy the change in weather.

TOD:

Another big fan of her 60's albums.  Just about every single one of them is pretty cherce.  I also like STONY END and THE BROADWAY ALBUM.  But out of everything, I most enjoy the first disc of her JUST FOR THE RECORD collection, which featured live recordings from very early in her career.  It's amazing to her Streisand when she took risks with her voice and riffed and trilled and scat through her songs.  It's a joy to hear her sing on these tracks opposed to the mannered perfectionist she later became.

I, too, am a HUGE fan of JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG. I bought the full frame laserdisc just to get the added quality laserdisc offered at the time (and it was NOT cheap). I HATE that the DVD of the film is not an anamorphic transfer.

I remember an article at the time of the Oscars noted that Garland and Clift were both robbed of statuettes for the film basically because it was felt Academy members didn't think stars should be slumming in supporting roles and being awarded Oscars for them. This is absurd, of course, but that seems to have been the thinking about why neither won (and, of course, WEST SIDE STORY swept every category it was nominated for except screenplay which was also against the movie.)

BK, what did the HD version of JUDGMENT look like? Were there specks and dirt and scratches in the transfer? Was it as sharp as you were expecting? Did it look as dimensional as good HD can look? This may be the HD transfer they use for a Blu-ray somewhere down the line, so I'm naturally curious about its quality.

Count me as another who revels in Streisand's 60s output and blanches at most everything else. Even THE BROADWAY ALBUM is overproduced and irritating occasionally with its manufactured dramatic intensity with some of the singing. Still, it's the closest she's gotten to her singing in the 60s.

Favorite track of all-time: "Starting Here, Starting Now."

I'll be heading down in a bit to try to get at least two more UNIT episodes watched before heading out to lunch with friends. With six left to go and my needing to watch primetime shows mostly "live" tonight since Thursday is crammed so full with shows on opposing networks, I must get a leg up of viewing this morning.

And a happy 74th birthday to one of my all-time favorites: Dame Julie Andrews. She has given me so much pleasure in my life. The world would have been a far gloomier place had she not been with us.

This is so-o-o-o cute:

Grace the Librarian

Her re-purposing of the car and the Virgin Mary statue remind me of the time Rob wanted to be Sherlock Holmes and didn't have a deerstalker hat.  He used 2 baseball caps, one with the bill in the front and one with the bill in the back, to create one.

re: adding "Maybe This Time, "Mein Herr," and "Money, Money" to current stage versions of CABARET:

I still prefer "Don't Tell Mama" to "Mein Herr," but the other two songs are most welcome to the show's songstack. "Money, Money" is far superior to the fast-talking "The Money Song" in the original. All of these, of course, give the role Sally more spotlight time.

I like "The Money Song" and "Money, Money" - but it is hard for me to listen to anyone sing "Maybe This Time" and not hear Miss Liza Minnelli.

As for this Barbara Stryzand person you are talking about, I do not think I know her.  I may have seen her in a movie once with Ryan O'Neal, but I do not know from her singing.  But since that doesn't stop me from expressing an opinion, I will just be like Rufus T. Firefly and say "I'm against it!"
