I taught GREAT EXPECTATIONS to my advanced eighth graders for many years. It's my favorite Dickens book, and the film version, while dropping a fair number of subplots, is most masterful in retaining everything that's important.

I had no trouble with John Mills as the older Pip, but Valerie Hobson seemed WAY too old as Estella. Martitia Hunt was perfection as Miss Havisham. In fact, apart from Hobson, I think the movie is perfectly cast.

BTW, Jean Simmons, who makes a grand young Estella here, played Miss Havisham in a BBC miniseries of the novel many years later.

Saturday morning greetings!  Beautiful breezy autumn day here in SW Ohio - there's a blizzard of yellow leaves going on in our backyard.  I'm about to go to the grocery so I can be back to see Michigan get slaughtered by play football against Purdue.

My work project for today is TWO GIRLS AND A GUY. I've never seen this romantic comedy before. It IS a Fox Blu-ray, however, so at least I'm going to see it with its greatest opportunity for video and audio quality.

I can't tell you how disappointed I was to be reviewing ICE AGE 3 on DVD rather than the Blu-ray disc. Everything seemed a bit duller and lackluster compared to the Blu-ray of the second one which I watched a week ago in anticipation of getting the Blu-ray of the third one to review.

Yes, those price cuts on DVDs at Wal-Mart, Target, and Amazon have spilled over to pricing on Bluray, too. HARRY POTTER is now three dollars less than the pre-order price I paid (and have since had adjusted by Amazon).

I'm heading down now to finish NORTH BY NORTHWEST which I got about 3/4 of the way through last night. Will also watch the new documentary on Hitchcock contained within.

Little known fact about Johnny Mercer:

He was originally set to write the lyric for the main theme to THE SANDPIPER.

I don't know the exact reason (Perhaps he was ill), but at some point, he was replaced by Paul Francis Webster.

The song, "The Shadow of Your Smile," won the Oscar that year.

His lyrics were rejected, according to Johnny Mandel's interview (one of the ones that was cut, along with a great one by J.M.'s friend Rod McKuen). J.M. was never one to talk ill of anyone (when sober, anyway) but he did name that song on a BBC show when he was asked if there were any songs he wish he'd written. And he got a little revenge by making a joke about thinking that "The Shadow of Your Smile" referred to a lady with a mustache.

Another favorite lyric from my favorite song cut from the film (Johnny's screen debut, too!) "There's nothing like a college education"

Well, I left my old plantation in the south-a/ With my southern accent drippin' from my mouth-a

as well as rhyming  sprechen with "I reckon"!

Anyone who loves Mercer's lyrics owes it to themselves to buy Robert Kimball's beautiful book:

Then, there's also the S.T.A.G.E benefit, DREAMl  THE LYRICS OF JOHNNY MERCER (which has bk's close friend Jason Graae singing "Spring, Spring, Spring.")

Now that you mention it, I do recall Webster telling me that Mercer's lyrics were rejected for that song.

I don't really think there are serious prospects for Adriana right now - I take all of this with a grain of salt.  The producer has worked a lot in TV, that's all I really know.  But it's good to pass on these excellent suggestions.

LATIMES

Quote
California cities act to ban cat declawing

L.A. is among those rushing to prohibit the practice before a state law backed by a group of vets says they can't.
...
Veterinarians who did not want cities meddling in their business persuaded the state Legislature to bar local governments from banning the practice of declawing cats -- beginning in 2010.

Not wanting to be pushed around themselves, nearly half a dozen cities are rushing to prohibit the controversial procedure before the January deadline, striking a blow for rights both animal and municipal.
...

I have no death-wish, so I will not suggest a discussion of the pros and cons of banning de-clawing; the story does raise interesting issues about what levels of government have the right to dictate to others.

der Brucer

I think that declawing cats is a barbaric practice, even though I didn't realize that until after I had Angel and her brother P.T. delcawed.  Still, I am afraid that banning the practice will cut down on the number of cats that will be adopted.  Just my two-cents.

My poor niece is not feeling well after her thursday flu shot.

She had a fever yesterday and was totally out of it. And now in the middle of the night she woke up with a bloody nose which she got everywhere. And now she has a fever again (close to 103F). But at least the meds are bringing it down.

I know it is a common symptom in kids to get this reaction after the H1N1 shot. IT just sucks. My poor sis is losing her mind because she is so tired.

Poor Megan, & your sister.  Are you going over to help? What meds did they give her?  I really hadn't read about the reactions to the shot.  I thought only the live virus would cause this kind of severe reactions.  Reminds me of the 2 times I had the old, live virus, flu shots as a kid.  Both times I got the flu after recovering from my reaction.

VIBES YOUR  NIECE FEELS BETTER & STAYS THAT WAY!!!

I actually kind of liked SWING VOTE.  Not a great film by any measure, but good performances and one which didn't answer the ultimate question at the end, which I really liked.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm starting to think that I really should just listen to "Car Talk" and "Wait, Wait.. Don't Tell Me" via their podcast format.  This whole routine of staying in bed on a Saturday morning listening to WNYC is, well... Neither good, nor bad.  Just not "ideal", I guess. Especially on a beautiful, sunny Fall day in New York City.

DR Jose, I download the podcasts from "This American Life" and "Wait,Wait" to my ipod, and it give me motivation to take at least an hour-long walk. Haven't been able to do that much lately due to schedule and weather, but you can listen and be out in the weather, too!

Note: T.I.L. broadcasts are only up for the week, but "Wait, Wait" is archived.
