Watching Gone With The Wind - it already feels like I've been watching for four hours and I'm only ninety minutes in.  I'm enjoying aspects of it more than I have in the past, but its mostly a movie whose universal charms elude me for the most part.

flannel sheets

One of my favorite luxuries in the whole world!         :)

Mine too, until Sherlock came snuggling. ;D  Maybe my tolerance is lower than it used to be.  I find it hard to imagine one dog leaves more hair than 1 dog & 4 cats did, and Bogie, the long haired cat, slept under the covers with me all night.

Looks like Penelope's

I guess I must have been away from the set when the photographer showed up.

You won't admit it but you were away ... with the photographer's assistant!  ;)

Well, the soundtrack to Nine will have a digital release on December 15, and the actual CD will be released on December 22.  Here's the cover:

So...who's leg is that?  Any guesses?

;)

That's Daniel Day-Lewis' leg after a shave!  ;D

And "I" gets a kick out of it!!

I haven't seen the GONE WITH THE WIND Blu-ray, but I do know that by the time GWTW started filming, Technicolor had developed a film that didn't need the heavy arc lamps that were used with OZ. Supposedly that's why the color has always been less bright but richer and deeper.

I read this in one of the making of GWTW books around here.

I finished VERTIGO when I went downstairs. My friend John timed it perfectly because the film had no sooner wound up and I started searching for a bonus feature to watch than the phone rang with John telling me he was ready for me to come over.

I got home about 9:15

Got his receiver problems solved and we watched excerpts from a DVD a videotape, and the cable box to make sure everything was running through the system just right. We were watching TOBRUK on tape (I've never seen it; looks like I might like it), TOMORROW NEVER DIES on DVD, and HAIRSPRAY was showing on HBO-HD.

When I got home, I started watching MEDIUM. A good episode tonight, very unusual even though the mystery didn't really allow us to guess ahead of time.

How they keep thinking of these variations on Allison's psychic powers, I just don't know.

Also, did you notice the kids weren't around much at all this week. I think they must have been in fewer minutes of the show this week than ever before, and Ariel wasn't there at all.

It would be hard for color to be richer and deeper than in the Technicolor portions of the Wizard of Oz Blu-Ray transfer.  Also, I'm not really talking about richer and deeper color, I'm talking about too much yellow.  However, now that I'm more than halfway through, other than a few sections when the yellow is pumped so hard that people look like they have jaundice, the transfer is really very nice - sharp, textured, and for a good portion of it the color palette is fine.  There are certain scenes where it's perfect, and that includes the Selznick logo at the top.  My worry basically came from the opening scene, which is not that indicative of what follows.

It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. I think the movie I did the most drastic reverse on was NASHVILLE which I was not a fan of when I first reviewed it for the news syndicate where I was free-lancing. Years later, I watched it again (on cable, I believe), and I finally got it. Now I think it's really wonderful.

I know nothing about color timing, film stock, etc. I'm just relating what I read about the differences in the types of lighting that were used in the two productions and that the result was a less bright but more sensual feel to the color. Again, not my idea; just what I read.

I found the yellow-ness rather transitory and limited almost entirely to skintones, which I mentioned in my review.  Over all I think this was a splendid transfer.

The NY Pops Johnny Mercer concert was quite good with many wonderful moments. After a while, I started to feel there were too many charts aiming to give each singer a raise-the-crowd-to-their-feet-screaming moment that became aurally exhausting but each singer had wonderful moments: Ann Hampton Callaway sang the most beautiful rendition of "Skylark" I've ever heard, with a wonderful unnamed pianist, Kevin Kuhn on guitar, bass, drums, and sax solo. The most beautiful orchestral playing was the orchestra performing Johnny Mandel's arrangement of "Emily," and the other singers each had at least one fantastic moment:
James Lane on "Hooray for Hollywood" and :One for My Baby"
Michael Feinstein on "I Remember You" and a Revenge Medley of "I Want to be Around to Pick Up the Pieces and Gody Goody"
N'Kenge (pronounced "Nuhkengee," I believe} on "Autmn Leaves" and "Come rain or Come Shine"

There was also a group of kids, Camp Broadway Kids, who went on too long and amused the noisy parents around me. They closed the program, and I think they should have performed early and cleared out for the adults.

After a while, though, I kept thinking, Give me a band of 30 at the maximum so it doesn't all sound so soupy.

This was the first Pops concert I'd been to since a Christmas one conducted by that scumbag Skitch Henderson around 1996, which was under-rehearsed, sloppy, and poorly prepared. This was slick and very well prepared and performed. I had a good time
