RE: Avatar being a bear bones release.

The press release said that it was a bare bone because that way the can have the highest bitrate possible.

All of the stats seem to indicate that the disc is pretty much maxed out because of the high bit rates in both audio and video.

. . .also, the aspect ratio was changed for home video, wasn't it?  (of AVATAR).

Those bastards! >:(

Well, they may be bastards, but, I did some fast fact-checking and the aspect ratio of 1.78:1 is correct.  Therefore, I stand corrected.

It was shown at multiple aspect ratios depending on the kind of theater where it played. The 2-D showings were at 2.35:1. The IMAX were 1.78:1. But the film was composed at 1.78:1 according to Cameron. For him, that's the ideal ratio.

RE: Avatar being a bear bones release.

And that is b.s.
The reason is that AVATAR will see a second release towards the end of the year with the bonus features AND another release in 2011 with the most recent 3-D technology (and this comes not from idle gossip or chatter, but, from the corporation which I am employed by. . .we are supposed to tell the customers that this is the reason there are no special features if they inquire).

Actually, both are correct. The bit rates are maxaed out on the Blu-ray. But it's a barebones release because Cameron didn't have time to get everything prepared he wanted for the bonuses, so Fox has made NO secret that a special edition is coming out for the holidays. And a 3-D version will be released once they feel there are enough of the new design 3-D sets/players to warrant it.

When I went downstairs, I watched (as I intended) the DVD of BARTON FINK.

First I was astonished by the way it looked. All of the cable versions I've seen were pale and grainy. The DVD had very saturated color and only showed normal film grain.

It has obviously been a long time since I saw the movie because there were some scenes I had no memory of at all. Such a treat to see it again.

Then I began rewatching season four of BONES. This is the first of the guest intern seasons. Clark Edison and Daisy Wick, the interns in the first two/three episodes are my least favorite interns, and I'd be happy if they NEVER showed up again. (Edison was on last night's new BONES episode much to my displeasure.)

On the question of seeing AVATAR in the theater, I can say positively that I have NO regrets about not seeing it in a theater.

And now I'm getting very sleepy. I do plan to take my walk tomorrow morning, so I'm going to head down now and go to bed.

Good night!

I just watched last night's FLASHFORWARD.  Best episode since its premiere.  Oh, and Michael Massee has toothpicks for legs. . . .

I have returned from my theatre and dinner evening with my friend Chris. I think THE KID, based on Dan Savage's book, is a wonderful musical about a gay couple adopting a baby. The libretto is funny and touching, the lyrics are good, and the score, by my friend Andy Monroe, is very good. The arrangements and the band are excellent, but i must admit I'm bummed that he didn't ask me to orchestrate it.

We stayed after to see my friend Ann Harada, who's quite wonderful in a multitude of roles, as is everyone in the excellent ensemble. Chris Sieber is amazing as Dan Savage; I don't think he leaves the stage in either act. I'm a huge fan of his and his work here is excellent. Jill Eikenberry is very funny as his mother. I really recommend this production by The New Group, and I hope it gets great reviews and a recording. Ann tells me they're opening on May 10.

The first quote by the movers several weeks ago when I asked them to package and move everything in the house was well over $5,000.  I have spent the last several weeks shlepping stuff day by day to the new house, and today the mover gave me a quote for the few large items left here of $600.  So I told Betsy she owes me $4400.  ;)

Is IMAX really 1.78?  I always thought it was square - 4.3
