DR Jane: Today is a strange day - in many ways considerd the anniversary of Australia's Birth By Fire. We "celebrate" a total disaster. It however a sombre day and now taken far more seriously than when I was child. The major event here in my state is the Dawn Service at Melbourne's Shrine Of Rememerence which is attended by thousands of all ages. It is a very moving ceremony. The morning then has a march (parade/procession) of war veterens and said march ends at the Shrine for another service. The afternoon has many reunions of soldiers from the various conflicts. Most town throughout the country would have some type of service at their local war memorial. In the last decade or so the events have been by many young people. When I was their age we had less pride and knowledge as the vets really did not talk about such things to our generation.  The Vietnam conflict may well have given Australians a different perspective. Many Australians now take to trip to Turkey and/or Northern France ro attens Anzac day ceremonies there. Colin and I attended those in Northern France and Belgium three years ago. Australians are though of very highly by the people of the region and Anzac Day is a major event in some villages of Northern France.

MATTH - after all these years, I have read that Marjorie Main was still under contract to MGM during the "Kettle" years and of course was loaned out to Universal-International at a premium for those movies.  She was not happy at the arrangement since she didn't share in the bounty, but that's Hollywood!

I just assumed that she had a "dual ownership" deal with the two studios, but I guess not. What a shame for her. I haven't looked at her filmography, but other than ROSE MARIE, SUMMER STOCK, and THE BELLE OF NEW YORK, I can't think of any MGM movies she made during her KETTLE years. MGM didn't even use her in THE OPPOSITE SEX while used a ton of women. Of course, Marjorie had been in their original version THE WOMEN.

MATTH - I agree....that surprised me as well when I realized what was happening.

Certainly Charlotte Greenwood was OKAY in "The Opposite Sex", but Main was hilarious in THE WOMEN.

Well the C-Span hostess is wandering around near booths 320 and 321 so she is nowhere near MR BK and Panni in booth 132!

Oh well!

How can they have a panel discussion on the 1960's and NOT include BK?

Universal is becoming my new heroes with these multi-movie sets (Kettles, A&C, now Durbin) at such CHEAP prices.

I agree! I am really hoping that they will release their INNER SANCTUM films on DVD as well as the Creature from the Lagoon of Black films and/or any of there other 50s B films!

April 27 I will have a whole giant box of Universal DVDs in the mail! And even though I am not a big fan of Miss Durbin's I shall be buying her set of DVDs....I am likely not yet a fan as I have only seen one of her films thus far, which I have to say I very much enjoyed (LADY ON A TRAIN).

I think you will like Deanna DRMBARNUM.  Her musical interludes are almost always enjoyable.

Cookies:  Pecan Sandies and a simple Lorna Doone.

Was at the Festival of Books.  Saw Mr. Kimmel and the redoubtable Panni.  I leave details to Mr. K.  I'm sure there will be many.

Emily what did the woman consider the best toffee & chocolate to put in those cookies?

WEL I have never had a waffle cookie but it sounds intriguing. Years ago I could get delicious potato chip cookies at the Philadelphia airport.

SWW I will have to get the wine at the market.  Except for wine from Shasta, California the wines are from Oregon.

WFO those Fattigmann look yummy.  It’s a good thing I’m stuffed from all the food at our “Taste of Ashland” outing today.

Thanks Tomovoz.  I have had an interesting history lesson today.  I had heard of the battle but didn’t really know much about it.  Is Scottish Shortbread, another favorite cookie of mine, popular in Australia?  I like Walkers for store bought.

I'm not familiar with him.  Are the wines under his label?  I'll have to check it out.  Thanks for the info.

CharlesPogue I found the site for Kent Wright Cellars.  His white wines, which I drink, are all under different labels.  I don’t recall any of them were at the wine tasting today.  I will watch for them in the wine section of the market.

Back, but on my way to Glendale.  I have photos to share and details to share but I shan't share them if we are going to achieve a new low.  You dear dear people out there in the dark are supposed to be keeping the home fries burning so get off thine butt cheeks and do so.  I want lots of postings upon my return for my mental delectation.

I'm back at home after my niece's 20th Birthday celebration.  She received lots of money and a couple of DVD TV series ("Friends" 7th season and "King of Queens" 2nd season).  The cake was a triple layer white cake with strawberry whipped cream and whole strawberries between the layers and covered in real whipped cream with whole strawberries on the top.  It was pretty good (it cost more than $30!) but the filling reminded me too much of strawberry Jell-O mixed with Cool Whip and just wasn't quite what I would have chosen.  Since it was my niece's choice, I didn't complain...until now.

Anyway, that's my contribution to keeping the home fries burning .  I hope it helps!

I signed in to get the news but there's no news!

I wanna know how you did that cool cat graphic, Jane!  Where did it come from?

I thought this would be an easy day but I did a lot more then I thought.  Mowed the grass, took the dogs to the dog park, took the dry cleaning to the cleaners, went to the mall, did some grocery shopping...  Whew!  I'm tired.  :)

I wanted to tell DR Jose about the foot/leg stuff I found at the local K-mart.  I remember he said something about wanting a foot bath after all the walking around he did in NYC.

You know how you have to run the gauntlet of stuff they try to get you to buy by the registers?  Well, there were some packets shaped like feet that said it was "soothing for tired feet and legs".  I bought a couple of packs and threw them into the suitcase.  I will let you know if they are any good or not.

I love cookies but I decline to speak of them right now.  I'm trying to be extra good before I leave on my trips.  My weight goal is in reach.

Noel, I would have said the same thing.  I can't speak with facts but I do agree with you.

Dan (the Man), I bought a little 56k modem for it that fits the slot perfectly.  What I'm understanding is that it is a software problem but I don't understand why.

Oh well.  Maybe I can find one of the cyber cafes I've heard about and can log in for a quick "hello" there.

The SO and I spent the day eating junk food and watching deeveedees...

We started out with Cronos, by Guillermo del Toro, segued into Ziegfeld Girl with Judy, Hedy and Lana, eased into Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which was simply atrocious, and our latest destination was Airport '75...and in a few minutes, we'll top off the day with In the Good Old Summertime, just to end the day on a high note.   D flat.

DR Danise:  You can also use the computers for free at the Visitor's Centre (in Times Square right beside the McDonalds). I use them when I go to NYC.
