Here's my final bit of Herbert doggerel for the day. This manuscript looks as if he accidentally spilled something on the original.
I've filled in in parentheses what the lyrics look like to me, but it's speculation and I'm hoping one of you may have a better idea. When you read what he was given that's legible, you'll know how far the world of lyric writing has advanced, and it validates my opinion that Herbert, unlike Sullivan, lacked one thing: a really good writer like W.S. Gilbert:
Somewhere there is somebody to love me,
Someone to make me a blushing bride;
His heart like my own will be so lonely,
Only
'Til fate comes to bring him to my side.
(Refrain 1)
My day will come, I know,
A gypsy told me so;
_____ _____ _____ _____ ______blessed
(My lot the heav'ns have)
For in the west
My love is calling;
Fair is he, with millions saved for me.
For years she tells me he has found me enthralling.
(Refrain 2)
Soon wedding bells will chime,
Ring in our wedding time;
My heart shall be his throne
Where he alone
Shall reign forever;
Love __ ____ ___ ____ ___ weight in gold,
(I'm told, is worth its)
Oh, happy day day when I shall call him my own!
