I have not been fortunate enough to see many cabaret acts, so I'm not the best judge, though I have a number of recordings of acts, including the Callaway sisters, Bobby Short, Nancy Lamott and Jason Graae that I enjoy.
When I lived in Sarasota back in the 1990s, Ann Morrison lived there while raising her son. She did a number of community productions, including directing "Merrily We Roll Along" from the original script. She also did a cabaret act that I happened to see twice, and I loved the intimacy, the way of feeling that the person on stage is singing directly to you. Or at least the person next to me (the paper's theater critic). In addition to one or two songs from "Merrily," she did one song that stays with me after all these years. It was about how we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
I would love to see more.
