I find it interesting that there is not a cloud in the sky, yet we are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 7 p.m.

Has anyone read "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest Gaines?  It is not a self help book, at least I don't think it is.
 http://www.amazon.com/Lesson-Before-Dying-Oprahs-Book/dp/0375702709
My friend wants to send it to me and I'm deciding if she should.

It's a wonderful novel about a young man on death row facing up to the actions he made that placed him there. I love Gaines' writing. "Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" was another of his books. I enjoyed that one, too.

My air condioner is chugging along in the bedroom getting it ready for me cool night in bed.

Did you figure out how to set it up or did a friend help you?

I had a friend come over and set it up for me.  Three days later, I tore the whole thing apart and moved it into the bedroom on my own.  The living room / dining room / hall and kitchen area was to big an area for this little 7000 btu air conditioner to try and cool down.

I thought it rolled around and fit through doorways.  Often we only turn the air on in our bedroom, not today though.  Keith has the entire house cooled down :(

That is the impression that they give when you buy one, but once you read the instructions, you find out that you have to vent these things to the outside.  You could vent it out a slider, or in my case, out the bedroom window.

I knew you had to vent it outside because DS Bryan told me that.  I still thought it fit through doors.  Would you still have purchased it had you known?

Oh sure.  My question is why didn't Bryan tell me?

What I used to love was way back in the 80s when Channel 4 in NYC would show two back-to-back episodes of MTM at 3:00 am.  It was the perfect way to wind down after a night out in the city.

Well, the second best perfect way...

I used to watch these too!!

and there was that episode that ends with Mary's date saying somthing along the lines of there is no perfect way to celebrate saying I love you and Mary Richrads says  "there is ...."

Yes, it is fiction. I also think there was an HBO movie made of it. You might be able to get it from Netflx or your library. Don't know how good it is, except, something dim in my memory makes me think Don Cheadle is in it.

What a coinkydink!  Last week, I had to return a brand new DVD copy of "Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" because it had no discs!  It was sealed, but the DVDs were not included.  Anyway, the replacement just arrived today and it's sitting on my desk, right in front of me.

Just had to share. :)

I don't know if I have seen that movie in 20 years at least. Post something on whether it holds up. I'm sure Cicely Tyson's performance does. That was an impressive piece of work to me as a kid when I first saw the movie.

It is sad, but I don't remember exactly being depressed by it. It's been more than 12 years since I read it. I know I was living in Florida at the time. I also remember seeing Gaines at a reading here in San Antonio and meeting him afterward for a second. Great reading, and it was from "A Lesson ..." He had the packed house mesmerized with the passage he chose.

There's a great new autobiography with a title like "There's Mel, There's Woody and There's You." The author's name was Bruce something.

I'm also slowly pacing myself as I read through the Little House books for the first time. There's a great deal of food stuff in them but there's also the wonderful stories of life in America before the cities took over. Plus, in this heat, it's been fun to read about chopping ice when it's 5 below zero outside and sledding, etc.
