Oh it's called RAGBRAI  Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.   It started with some reporters from the Des Moines Register and has turned into a really cool thing. Cities compete to be the over night cities. Since there aren't very many cities on the Missouri, we get to host th beginning every few years. You dip your wheel in the Missouri to get started and then dip your wheel in the Mississippi at the end.

Do you have to be a very good rider?

The store leaves index cards on books various people recommend.  I asked myself the same question and I can't answer it.  The guy that helped me in the store wrote the review for The Magicians and I have mixed opinions on his suggestions.

I can usually get a good idea about a book from reading the amazon.com reviews. If you read enough reviews you can usually tell what kind of book it is.  If you're not sure about these two books you can always request them from your library and start them. And if you hate them you can stop reading.

I recently read Fifteen.  While I still enjoy them they are getting somewhat redundant so I'm not rushing to read sixteen.

I didn't know a movie was in production-funny since I was thinking about it yesterday and wondered what happened.  Last I heard Reese Witherspoon was maybe doing it, and that was a few years back.

I think Jason O'Mara is a good choice for Morelli.  What does your mother think of the cast?

Not sure. I'm not really familiar with the characters. But the movie is definitely happening.

My thoughts Jennifer.  I've got plenty to read at the moment and my look at them again later.

Jennifer you might like the books.  I suggest giving the first one a try.  They are funny which is why they are so popular.

My mom is also getting the new James Patterson book, called PRIVATE (not sure if there is another word in the title). The reviews on amazon were not very good.

Enjoy!

You're talking about Stephanie Plum?

I might try the first book. But not for a while.

I am #1 or 2 for quite a few books. Plus I asked for an inter-library loan for a series from one of my favorite authors (Richelle Mead). But I'm not sure if they will find the books.

I don't remember which one I tried to read, but I didn't find it funny at all.  And I also didn't finish it.

Just have to be able to ride 500 miles in 7 days.  Some people prep for months, others don't prep at all.

I enjoy light mysteries with some humor.  But I didn't care one bit for Stephanie.

On the whole I'm not a fan of vampire books or movies.  I did go to Transylvania and have a t-shirt to prove it.

DR elmore--I'm listening to Kim Criswell's CD ("Back to Before") and see that you did the orchestrations for several of the songs.  I guess you've worked with just about every Broadway performer!

Tomovoz and I were discussing M. C Beaton's books.  I said I loved the Hamish Macbeth series, but couldn't stand the Agatha Raisin books.  At the exact same time he was writing me back and saying that he loved the Agatha Raisin series, but wouldn't touch Hamish Macbeth.

LOL!

TCB if you don't like Stephanie I'll just have to leave ;)

In truth I'm going to go sit outside and finish reading another excellent suggestion from DR td, The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane.  I don't care for the title and had td not insisted I may have skipped the book.  Regardless of my opinion having read most the book I can't think of a more appropriate title.

I didn't used to be a fan either.  But in the books I enjoy, the vampire part is only a small part of the stories.  The people might have abilities that we don't have. But most of the stories are still really relatable.  For example, Richelle Mead (who I mentioned) writes a series called Vampire Academy. And the books have been heartbreaking and unbelievable.  But I think her audience is younger.

I've only read one of Patterson's books.

The only book I've read of his is Sunday at Tiffanys.

But my mom has read the Alex Cross books and the Women's Murder Club. And she loves them.

That's like 70 miles a day.  That is a lot. I can't believe people could do that and not prepare for it.  How many hours a day do they ride?

I bike every day. But I still think I'd have trouble doing this. I'd think you'd have to be in very good shape.

Unless ... are they riding really slowly?

I've known Kim through John McGlinn since around 1985.

Ginny I don't have The Group.  Are you enjoying the book?

I read it in 1964, either before or right after I finished Katherine Anne Porter's SHIP OF FOOLS. Mary McCarty and Lillian Hellman hated each other and I'm siding with Lillian. Miss McCarty is a homophobic old coot, who in THE GROUP certainly dislikes gay men and lesbians, which I find surprising given her world of actors and private ladies colleges.

Is this the same Mary McCarty who was in Follies and Chicago?  Not that it matters, but I'm just curious.
