DR Jose,  I was wondering why you were in Virginia. Your day yesterday sounds fantastic.

DR elmore - It was a perfect storm, in a sense. My brother Jay's visit from San Diego, my nephew's birthday, Arena Stage's Homecoming and my brother Mike's (upcoming) birthday.  I had originally planned to come down last weekend for a quick 36 hours, but once I realized that Jay was going to be in town for two weeks instead of one, it just made more sense to come down for an extended weekend.  -As an added bonus, I've been able to catch up with some other friends and relatives too.

Synchronicity!

DR JOSE loved your description of the celebration at the theater!  I may borrow that quote about the torch to use at our 50th anniversary celebration next summer.

Thank You, DR JRand.  Zelda Fichlander also shared a wonderful quote about the need and importance of Art, playwrights, in particular, from one of Chekhov's lectures:

"The change a person, you must first show them who they are."

Oh... There was one other very moving moment from yesterday's Homecoming that will forever stick in my mind. Guy Bergquist, Operations Manager, the man who coordinated all of the various stages of construction of the new building, after introducing all three of the Artistic Directors, wanted to introduce one more person, Tom Fichlander.  Tom was Zelda's beloved husband, and it was with Tom's initial monetary support that Arena got started.  He shifted his energies from life in the corporate world to support not only the work of his wife, but of the Arts, in general, in the DC area. Guy pointed to the Arena Stage baseball cap that he was wearing, and said, "This was Tom's".  -Cue the tears.

*And then when Zelda shared her own, very personal remembrances of Tom, she mentioned that Tom would always give her notes after the first full dress rehearsal of a show. And that he would always give her the same first note. Always: "Needs cutting." :)

I completely forgot about the Arena Stage celebration yesterday!  Thanks for the report, DR Jose!

You're welcome, DR KevinH.  -Of course, I bet if the WSMA had been there - and Mr. Barrett has indeed performed at Arena Stage before - you would not have forgotten. ;)

It was great to see some fellow Arena Stage alumni who had traveled from far and wide just for yesterday's homecoming.  Some had even taken a weekend off from their Broadway shows to be a part of the celebration.

And just to give you and idea of what "they" did to Arena, here is a picture of the roof(!) of the Fichlander Stage (the theatre in-the-round) from one of the new inside terraces):

They literally built another roof over the existing buildings! -Plus created a third theatre space, new offices, new rehearsal studios, an underground parking lot, two classrooms, a cafe, elevators, etc., etc., etc.

We are both up because in about 45 minutes we will go grocery shopping. First to Western Beef on 16th and 9th and then Trader Joe's on 21st and 6th.

I really do love that location of Trader Joe's. It's just so roomy in comparison to the 14th Street location. -I have yet to step foot into the new UWS location, but I guess that since I haven't heard any grumblings about it, it must provide a nicer shopping experience too.

*That's also where Souvlaki Truck and Wafels & Dinges set up shop too. ;)

Yes, going to Trader Joe's is now a very pleasant experience. You don't need shin guards and helmets. We did a big shopping and had a great checkout clerk and now we're home with lots of good food.

Kevin (and anyone else interested), here is the BBC Radio Wales site

Radio Wales

and here is the Listen Again site specifically for Beverley's program

Beverley Humphreys

These programs expire after a week so you might want the BBC iPlayer site as well. They list television at the iPlayer but if you're not in the UK you can't watch the television programs. You can only listen to the radio but there is lots to choose from so give it a whirl.

Unfortunately they are not but if you get in to New York during the Gift Bag packing I'll give you a copy of the reviews on CDs.

I have a bunch that I need to put onto CD but it's a lot of work and I just haven't had the time to finish the project. There are currently 3 CDs of my reviews and another CD with my interview from Christmas 2005.

Here is another show some of you may like. It's called Songs from the Shows. It's on BBC Tees which is in the Middlesborough area (Northeast England). I've become e-mail friends with the host Alex Hall. She's an actress and presenter in the Teeside area. She's a wonderful woman and I like her show very much.

When you come back, DR Jose:  do you recall what show Brent did at Arena?

If I'm remembering correctly, Brent popped into Closer Than Ever during its many-times-extended run at the Kreeger - and the eventually the Old Vat Room.  I do remember that Sally Mayes opened the run there opposite Meg Bussert.  I'll have to double-check my Playbills... Or call the office tomorrow. ;)

Sterling Hayden;  Margaret, the stage directions say your supposed be sullen.....

Bette Davis: Oh, for goodness sakes - just ignore those stage directions, it's the first thing an actress learns.

I started watching the sixth season of MEDIUM last night on DVD.

It is really a very well written, well done show, and it doesn't seem to get tired.

Great cast.

This is one of my favorite shows.

Maybe today we can all share photos of our OWN art, no matter what it may be.

I shared my "dancing" last week.

That is a great idea, Jrand.  Do you have any clips of your acting?

DR TCB sorry to hear about your friend.

Thanks, Jrand, but I must point out that he is not a friend.  We have had several clashes over the years.  However, all ill will fades when someone's life is involved.

I'll look through my files and see if I can post something of my "art". I don't know if I have anything.
