I finally called the police tonight to report the trash pickers that are constantly in the trash on my block.
This time they pushed me over the edge (poop and toilet paper in the palm tree where I park) they went too far.   From what the locals tell me is that they drive in from out of town and go through all the neighborhoods on a daily basis.  The guy two blocks over shoots golf balls down his alley when he hears them.  And the block on the other side, there have been fist fights between the tenants and the transients.
Oh to live at the beach.

Oh, authors never win awards :)

Also won - Best Director, Best Lighting, Best Set, Best Supporting Actress (Erin Rettig - Yoni), and Best Musical Number (I Need An Earthman).  There are other wins and I'll have the complete list in the morning.

I never thought of deviled eggs as a particularly Southern dish.

Maybe not, but I'm sure some grandmothers south of the Mason-Dixon Line would be more than happy to "convince" you otherwise. ;)

Oh, and DR Ben, I enjoyed your wit the other day regarding shin guards and helmets being needed at Trader Joe's. Yes, some TJ's get very crowded indeed!

DR Jeanne - Actually, if you do go into the TJ's on 14th Street, shin guards and helmets would serve you well.  And if you happen to venture in Zabar's on a Saturday morning, wrist guards and safety goggles would also be advisable.

DR Sam - First of all, what a horrible "problem" to deal with.  -And just what are they picking through the trash for?

Back to Southern Food for a sec...

There is one Southern food which, as much as I've tried to like, I just can't seem to add them to my "must have" list: ham biscuits.  Rather, the ham in those biscuits, which is traditionally the Smithfield type.  It's just too salty and practically "briny" to me.  Smithfield ham, by itself, always tastes slightly off to me - it has a seafood-y finish to it, at least to my tastebuds.  Now maybe I've just never had a Smithfield ham properly prepared - maybe no one has ever soaked it long enough to draw out "enough" of the salt that is used to cure it - but since I lived in Richmond for a number of years, well... However, I do like when Smithfield ham is used as a seasoning for beans, cabbage and greens.

I used to work with a woman who retired a few years ago and she received a Smithfield ham as a gift.  She brought it to a work potluck but didn't realize/know that they were supposed to be soaked.  I'd heard that it was much, much, much (that's three muches) too salty to eat and a lot was left over, which is quite unusual for our potlucks.

Did she also make the mistake of serving it in thick slices? The thinner, the better.

I wouldn't mind a nice Southern meal of fried catfish, hush puppies, and accoutrements right now - instead I'm eating bite-sized candies because I'm really hungry.  I could have probably just had another meal rather than all this junk, but it's cold out and I'm nice and toasty here.  I could make myself another English muffin, but I've been there and done that.

I watched tonight's episodes of "Chuck," "The Event" and "Castle."  I forgot that I set my DVR to record this morning's broadcast of "Summertime" with Katharine Hepburn on TCM-HD.  The picture quality is gorgeous.

I recorded "Light in the Piazza" when it was on last and that really needed to be cleaned up...there were specks everywhere.
