IMPROMPTU

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were impromptu and off the cuff (some of them were, in fact, on the cuff), and now it is time for you to post until the impromptu cows come home.

BK,

Perhaps I missed it in your column, but:

MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW was released onto DVD by The Criterion Collection a few months ago.

Wonderful movie!

Breakfast:  Duting a fundraising concert weekend,  everyone got together on a Sunday morning in the large kitchen of a lovely family we knew, and everyone pitched in and made breakfast together, so that we could all start out with a big family breakfast.  The food was great, the company even better.

Good movie!

I enjoyed the first IMPROMP movie, but didn't care for the sequel.

I first saw MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW about two months ago.  I have to admit, I did not care for the first two thirds--the story seemed to be unfocused and I was beginning to think the movie was about Fay Bainter.  But like BK said--that final third of the movie is wonderful and then heartbreaking.  Beulah Bondi and Victor Moore are revelations--it's always surprising to me to see such naturalistic perfomances in 30's films.  I might order a copy of this one through B&N.com while they're having their Criterion 50% off sale...

Good morning, all! I stayed up to finish reading LET ME IN and slept late. My day today consists of tidying the apartment and vacuuming, doing some folk song research on this Appalachian Christmas project for a meeting tomorrow, and a session this afternoon at the Loesser office over this new edition of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

Yesterday, we had a 3-hour recording session and got three more of the Victor Herbert piano pieces recorded; the two bitchiest, the unpublished scherzo and "Mountain Brook," are off our backs, and the only solo left to record is the well-known "Pan Americana." On Thursday we have a full day with Rebecca Luker, who will record several songs including two of Herbert's most famous, "Kiss Me Again" and "Indian Summer." At 3:30 she will be joined by a chorus of six men, including our E&T DRs Jason and DAW and Zak the naked Hercules, to record "Till the Right One comes Along," which I would swear is the original operetta number parodied in the title song from "Little Mary sunshine" (why isn't this silly show done more often?).

On Friday we record Mr Dillon McCartney, Miss Korliss Uecker, and Zak's two numbers with the ladies' chorus. "The Century Girl" and "That Old-Fashioned Garden of Mine," a number very much like the the Rodgers & Hart parody "In the Flower Garden Of My Heart."

When my friends Arie and Kevin lived in DC, I used to stay with them whenever I had work at the Library of Congress. On oe of those long weekends, we went to a local school pancake event raiser, and it was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had: pancakes, several kinds of eggs, sausage, bacon, fresh fruit. The only equivalent is the English breakfasts we were served at our hotel in London when we were recording in 2001 and 2002, although I find English bacon not very appetizing.

Monday morning greetings!  I really crashed last night - went to bed early and woke up early this morning very refreshed.  Have some puttering to do before cardiac rehab, then some shopping.  We're gearing up for our family gathering this Thursday - looks like the cousins are bringing some sunshine and warm weather with them from SoCal!

LOL! This is one of my favorite films; it's very funny and contans possibly the best performance by Bernadette Peters as an actress. Watching Judy Davis chase Hugh Grant is like watching a shark chase a minnow.

There's also a porn movie with this title, I hear

I'm not really a big breakfast eater per se. But if I get hungry I might eat lunch or a yogurt/fruit at 10am.

I love pancakes, blueberry ones are my favorite. My mom makes really good one and usually serves them for brunch every few months.

I'm not that crazy about french toast although I usually end up having it once every month or two (that is the other thing she serves for Sunday brunch).

My favorite eggs are probably poached which I eat maybe once every week or two.

re: last night's THE AMAZING RACE SPOILERS

Like DR Cillaliz, I was also okay with who went home last night. Athough I actually did like this team somewhat. They just got on my nerves last night. I mean with misreading clue after clue. And not even clueing in when the teams remarked (you came by taxi??).  And then when the father was doing the bowling. It was just bugging me. All the complaining. And it didn't even feel like he was trying that hard.  My favorite teams are the two top teams. And I"m crossing my fingers for the first all female team to win TAR. Both these teams are smart, physical and really supportive of each other and nice. So I am happy.  The father/daughter team is okay. But to me he seems to carry her. I'm more impressed with him than her. My least favorite are the 3 couples. Nick and Vicky (why didn't they show their speedbump?) seem physical but mentally less competent. All three couples, the men yell at times. They are so fairweather. They are all nice at times. But they are all mean with tempers. I do not like any of them much. And Stephanie whines. So i could see that team go. Although surprisingly since the guy was being nice yesterday I was sort of happy for them that they were not eliminated yet. They seemed truly grateful. And the guy did make her hussle. So weird with all the misread clues and everyone having to run back for their cabs.

Last night I watched the revitalized METROPOLIS on TCM.  I had never sat through the entire film so I wasn't sure how much of it was missing before.  The first two hours certainly live up to all the hype--the imagery is stunning -- operatic.  But it all comes to a mishmash of a mess in the final ten minutes with a silly chase scene (did anyone in cinema ever run as fast as Brigitte Helm?)

I do like a movie with big ideas behind it, though.  I'm especially enamoured of METROPOLIS's main theme (spelled out a number of times so it's not missed):  The mediator between Head and Hands must be the Heart.

DRs singsaw, and Jason in the same room at the same time with the Naked Hercules will be an experience, I'm sure.  Say Hello and Get Your Butts Back Here for all of us.

Will do!

I look forward to seeing them and learning what's going on. The six men recording are all good friends of mine, sharp and funny, and I think they'll get along great together. I love and adore Ms Luker, aka Mrs Burstein, and it should be a lot of fun.
