It's warm here, though it won't stay that way all day. Tonight is supposed to be cold and wet and miserable. But I'm just feeling to happy to let that bother me.

No particular Thanksgiving jumps to mind right now. When I was a kid, it was always a time for parental squabbles that usually ended with Mom storming off to the movies by herself while Dad grilled steaks (which I always preferred to turkey, and later found out that Dad did, too). They're married 56 years now, so I guess they outgrew that phase.

Thanksgiving morning greetings!  Richard and I are watching the Macy's parade.  After while, we'll go out to the retirement community to visit my aunt and take her some pumpkin pie before we pick up my mom for our Grand Finale dinner.

For MBarnum and other lovers of kitsch (I mean that in only the nicest way), I received an e-blast from VCI Entertainment that I think is keyed toward industry pro's, but you can take 60% off your entire order with the code HOLIDAY2010.  VCI has a lot of 1940s films that I think would interest MBarnum.

Well that almost--almost--makes more sense, as you could simply stay up late and go.  But 3 a.m.?  Insanity.

TOD - In 1977, when we were both young single Miami University librarians, my friend Becky and I went to New York for the Thanksgiving weekend.  We saw 5 shows:

A Chorus Line
I Love My Wife
The Wiz
For Colored Girls...
Side by Side by Sondheim

and, of course, stood along Broadway (at about 53rd) to watch the parade.  A family from New Jersey wanted to adopt us for Thanksgiving.

And, 30 years ago today Richard and I were in Michigan for Thanksgiving at my parents' followed by a weekend of pre-wedding parties for us.

Speaking of thankful, Jo and I made a run to a market for some dinner thingies and as soon as we got back into her driveway, the car's battery died and the car is now sitting in the garage waiting for my nephew Matt to take care of it tomorrow. I'm so glad it happened here than in Trenton, OH! We would have had a long walk in the rain.

The weather here is very wet and quite warm today.

DR  Druxy, i don't understand all your alarms about Sal Mineo and his casting couch. I can name too many "straight" actors who would have sex with their mothers in the mddle of Broadway at noon for a major role! I kniow one who's had a major tv sitcom. If the biographer were the salacious Darwin Porter, whose biographies are pure homosexual fantasy, I wouldn't believe a word, but that ass is a real exception.

For my Thanksgiving memory, I will give you an excerpt from my book:

I love Thanksgiving. I have very warm childhood memories of that
holiday.  Every year, we would have a family gathering at our home. My
aunt, uncle and two cousins, as well as my half-brother Hersh and his
family were always there.

We’d sit around the table and, after everybody had stuffed themselves,
people would tell jokes. My uncle, Kenneth, was the #1 storyteller,
but on this particular year, I also decided to contribute to the
merriment…with disastrous results.

I think it was 1954. I would have been thirteen-years-old.

Without contemplating the consequences, I told this very funny
joke that I’d heard at school, and I told it very well.

Correction! I didn’t just tell it very well. I told it brilliantly. I had a
captive audience.

Then, I came to the punch line…which ended with the word “f**k”.

My mother, who’d had a few too many drinks in her, started laughing
hysterically. No matter what else you say about her, she was a wonderful
audience.

Unfortunately, everybody else at the table sat in a stunned silence. If
my mother hadn’t been laughing, you could have heard a pin drop.

You see, in 1954, a thirteen-year-old boy did not say
“f**k”...particularly in front of adults.

The first one to speak was my father. Pointing at me, he started
shouting at my mother, “You’re the one who encourages him! This is all
your doing!”

Within two minutes, all of our very embarrassed guests had excused
themselves and left our house.

I don’t recall if I was sent to my room or not, but I know I never
told another joke at Thanksgiving dinner.

 ;D

That is AWSOME. I wish our thanksgivings had that much hilarity. All that really happens is I sit there while the adults talk over each other. Tis the season to bring books, fa la la la la, and pass the mashed potatoes already dang it.

Good morning, all! I stayed in yesterday and spent the afternoon reading the new Kay Thompson biography and watching tv with my beloved sister-in-law JoAnn, After SURVIVOR (yawn!), I called Steven LaBrie, who has asked to be released from the January recording sessions for personal reasons. So, I need to find a new baritone by Dec 1. I think I'll call Patrick Carfizzi first and see what his schedule looks like; if he's out, I'll call Kelly Markgraf. After that, I'll ask our pianist William Hicks for recommendations, but i'm hoping Patrick can do it.

It's a small dinner here today: Jo, me, and my nephew Matt. Mynephew Tim, who's suffering terribly from what the doctors think is Crohn's Disease, may join us. Since Jo is an amazing cook, I kinow it will be one fabulous dinner.

So, I'll check in later to see what everyone's up to.

DR Ginny, buy Rob a car.

DR Elmore - could you bring the Kay Thompson book you're reading when you come for pizza tomorrow?  I'd like to take a look at before I decide whether to order it for my Kindle or get a dead-tree copy.  Eloise was my childhood hero, for Lord's sake!
