Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Broadway and Hollywood and also Christmas-like, and now it is time for you to post until the Broadway and Hollywood cows come home.

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas — thanks to Bruce’s latest Kritzerland at the Gardenia show last night in West Hollywood. The evening was festive, the venue was packed, the performers were marvelous and, by the end of the night, Bruce had us all singing “White Christmas.”

Highlights were many: Jason Graae crooning “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”; Dan Callaway cozying up to Alet Taylor to sing Cy Coleman’s “Lovers on Christmas Eve” from “I Love My Wife”; and Bruce Vilanch cozying up to Jason to sing an uproarious “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Since they didn’t know the second verse, they riffed — on everything from the technical problems dogging the new “Spider-Man” musical to Tallulah Bankhead and Esther Williams. Mr. Vilanch, of course, was decked out in one of his famous T-shirts. In the spirit of the season, the red shirt was emblazoned with this message: “I’m not Santa — but you can still sit on my lap.”

“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” was a cinch for Callaway, who assailed the mountaintop monster’s heart, soul and smile with spiteful glee. It was a show-stopping moment, yes, but like the Grinch, whose efforts to steal Christmas were derailed by a pint-sized pixie from Whoville, Callaway’s shot at stealing the show was stolen by 8-year-old Lucy Taylor, Alet’s dynamo of a daughter, who belted out “That’s What I Want for Christmas” with the power and assurance of a Broadway vet. Not only did Lucy steal the show, she stole the hearts of everyone in the room.

Our beloved Bruce served up “Turkey Lurkey Time” on a non-musical platter, choosing to recite the words instead of singing them. As Bruce fowled, folks howled and everyone was left feeling very loosey goosey.

Next up in the Kritizerland at the Gardenia series will be an evening of Unsung Sondheim with special guest Millicent Martin and a still-to-be-announced cast. It will take place on the second (not the first) Wednesday in January. For reservations, call the Gardenia at 323-467-7444. The show is highly recommended by the likes of this ne’er-do-well lurker.

On this, my first day of vacation I'm still up early. It happened last year as well.

I usually get up without an alarm. It will take a few days to get re-adjusted.

We have to go shopping sometime today.

We have a technician coming on Saturday to fix a problem in our very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very (that's 10 verys) old radiator. Our apartment is fine but apparently there is a leak from our radiator into the apartment below and it's causing a problem in their ceiling. A part in our radiator must be replaced to stop the leak. We are told once this part is replaced that the problem of overheating (our apartment gets SO hot t hat we never turn on the radiators, the spill from the other radiators in the building being on is enough to heat our apartment and we always have a window open, ask anyone who has visited in the winter months) will be solved.

nice review from DR MARK.

Millicent Martin!

She's done several things, but of course in some quarters she's best known for co-starring with Miss Annette Funicello in THE HORSEMASTERS and standing around looking smart while Annette sings.

Neither is "Where Is Love?" from "Oliver!" which Tony Bennett sings on his Christmas album.

I was trying to upload a video onto YouTube last night that took forever, so I was up until the wee hours. It made start cleaning up some of the mess I have around my work area. I hope I can stick with it and continue to clean. It's long overdue.

Good morning, all!

I've been up  for some time ordering gifts online, locating things, and having some breakfast. I have to stop by the McGlinnventory this morning to pick up some inventory lists for Zak Stains before I head over to Toyland for some Victor Herbert edits.

BK, I'm happy to hear the show went so well. I was thinking how hard now it is to call something "Unsung Sondheim," a truth in 1994, when at this point nothing concerning SS is unsung.

Thursday morning greetings!  I'm off to Cincinnati for lunch with a Vera friend from whom I've bought some handcrafted items for Christmas gifts.  We thought it would be fun having lunch together instead of her mailing my purchases.

Actually, since I'm still pondering hliday and wintery songs, I suppose "Winter Was Warm" really isn't a Christmas song although it comes from a version of Dickens'  "A Christmas Carol."

I also love Gordon Lightfoot's "Song for a Winter's Night."

Most loathesome Christmas song: "The Little Drummer Boy"

Classical Christmas: Berlioz "L'Enfance du Christ"
                               Finzi "In Terra Pax"
Vaughan Williams "Fantasia on Christmas Carols"
                               Holst "Christmas Day"
                               Britten "Ceremony of Carols"
                               Bach "Christmas Oratorio" and Magnificat
Respighi "Lauda per Nativita del Signore"
Although it's a huge Christmas favorite, Handel's "Messiah" is only 1/3 a Chritstmas piece!

DR Jane you asked yesterday if we were having any get togethers for Chanukah.  Well I don't know about any official ones. But my mom and I went over last night and gave some gifts.  And we usually see the kids on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So will probably just light the candles together and give presents.

Kritzerland at the Gardenia show was wonderful last night! The entire cast was great, of course. I could listen to Jason Graae all day. The set list was a perfect blend of familiar, but not overdone Christmas songs, and lovely songs I've never heard before. The poetic reciting of "Turkey Lurkey Time" was hilarious! I know of other singers that were nicknamed "the little girl with the big voice" and you can now add Lucy Taylor to that list. Funny that Bruce mentioned that Lanny doesn't have lyrics on his chart because when Lucy got stuck, my immediate thought was "Can't someone help her?!" Now I know why she had to start over. I look forward to the Unsung Sondheim show next month.

Morning, all! Congrats to Bruce on the great show!

TOD:

Is it going to come as a big shock to anyone that I don't have too many favorite Christmas songs? Least favorite is easy: I'm with DR Elmore on that "Drummer Boy" abomination (who plays a drum for a BABY? Geez, we're trying to get some sleep here!)...

Besides the sarcastic Christmas songs (Tom Lehrer's "Christmas Carol" and Allen Sherman's "Twelve Days"), I'd have to go with a couple of songs from one of my favorite piano bar personalities, the late D. Jay Bradley, who used to have an annual Christmas-themed cabaret show at Don't Tell Mama's. He wrote "The Colors of Christmas" and "Don't Let Christmas Pass You By," both of which are lovely numbers. Damn, but I miss him...
