GALOSHES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were reminiscent of the Truman Capote character Holly Galoshes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in search of galoshes as they don't want to get their tender feet wet or muddy.

Woke up early as I am still feeling the effects of hate poisoning. I had been sweating and woke up very cold. I guess that's a good thig.

Monday morning greetings!  I've already been up for about an hour - WHY?  Because I crashed into bed last night at 9:30 when my early wake-up and a full day finally caught up with me.

It is ver-r-r-r-ry cold here in SW Ohio this morning!  Temps in the teens, with wind chills about zero.  I'm thinking of sending Richard or Rob to the grocery because I've developed an intolerance to the cold - must be the blood thinners...

I worked at a warehouse when I was sixteen, moving boxes around and stacking candy and cigarettes.

Good morning, all! I slept well, with a peculiar dream involving my grandmother's very haunted and terrifying house at 711 Tenth Avenue, Middletown Ohio, its renovation, its housewarming party with guests Kristen Chenoweth, Joshie, other friends, and the cast of THE APPLE TREE revival. I have no idea where the hell in my subconscious this megillah was created!

So, today's another convoluted day I wish I had not committed myself to: edits at Toyland at noon, followed at 6pm with meeting concerning McGlinn inventory going to the Library of Congress. Zak Stains needs the help but I'd rather chill out and stay home.

I think my first job was iin the periodicals dept of the Miami University library, Sept 1965. It lasted through grad school, 1970.

TOD - I did a lot of babysitting in our neighborhood and, then, the summer between high school and college, worked in the pediatrician's office where my mother was bookkeeper.

Morning, all!

Re: the strangeness of the word "Galoshes:" The Vestibules, a Canadian comedy trio, have a somewhat surreal sketch called "Bulbous Bouffant" which features that word rather heavily. Gives me a chuckle when I'm in the right mood for it.

TOD: Other than babysitting, my first regular job was in college, helping out my uncle in his desktop publishing business during the summer. Also worked at my school's instrumental analysis laboratory, calibrating and maintaining equipment. Good times...

TOD:  On the holidays, I worked for a couple who had a florist shop.  I would take all the deliveries of plants and flowers to the various hosptial rooms (when you could still do that and not have to check thme on at the nurse's station).  It was wonderful to be able to cheer up so man people like that.

After that, I was a bag boy at a grocery store.

Waiting for the doctor's office to open in a half hour. I still have this ear infection, which cleared up a little under a round of antibiotics, but is reverting to bad this morning. It's starting to block up and chewing isn't pleasant. Ugh.

TOD: When I was 12, I started delivering newspapers. Back then, there were two. The Louisville Courier-Journal in the morning, the Louisville Times in the evening.

It wasn't necessarily easy work, especially on mornings after a snowstorm. But the money was good. In the four years that I delivered papers, I was able to fund a summer in Europe and 2 1/2 years of college.

Unfortunately, it was the first of too many newspaper jobs.

It's 31 degrees here in the South of Jersey, so I guess I shouldn't complain (though it is cold...)

TOD: Babysitting. Then when I was in high school, one of the local car dealerships was clearing out their old sales files, and they hired a bunch of us to write the name of the buyer, the date of purchase, and the type of vehicle bought on index cards before they threw the file away.

I learned a couple of important things on that job.
1. Make the coffee bad the first time so it won't end up being your job.
2. Older men will hit on young girls (not me, one of the pretty girls).
3. You will suddenly have more friends when you get paid, and said friends will expect you to pick up the check.
