That WAS a kind teacher, DR JOSE.

MR BK forgot to mention the very important and classy Golden Globe Awards tonight.

Good morning from the city that never sleeps!

First, thanks DRs elmore and Cillaliz and everyone else for the travel vibes.  My flight to JFK was uneventful and I got into the city by about 11:30.  I was lucky in that I was able to check in to my hotel right away.

I was surprised when I approached the TKTS discount theatre booth at about 12:30 and saw almost no line.  I soon found out why--there were only a few Broadway shows listed (lots of off-Broadway, though).

I decided to see The Fantastics yesterday afternoon.  I had seen it about 30 years ago so it was almost like seeing it for the first time.  It was very entertaining and it helps when most of the songs are familiar (I have to say partially due to Ms. Streisand, who recorded I Can See It  and Much More, songs which I probably would otherwise have never heard).

As DR Ben mentioned, I visited him and Ant after the show and went for a very nice dinner in their neighborhood.

Their Christmas tree is still up and is very nicely decorated with lots of ornaments, many of which have special significance.

Ben and Anthony are the most hospitable hosts and even gave me a present:  some movie stills of the aforementioned Barbra in Hello, Dolly!  How nice was that!

Last night, I finished watching BASIL DEARDEN'S LONDON UNDERGROUND, the new 4-movie set from Criterion.

Good writing, direction and fine performances from actors who knew how to speak in a way that the audience could understand what they were saying.  [Is that a lost art?]

The only problem with the movies is that they are fifty years or more old, and they deal with issues like racism and homophobia in ways that are very outdated in today's world.

That aside, all four movies employ good storytelling, are very entertaining and well worth a look.

For the record, they are SAPPHIRE, THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, VICTIM and ALL NIGHT LONG.

Would that be SAPPHIRE by Push the author of PRECIOUS?

Even though I have seen Phantom of the Opera many times, I had never seen it with Hugh Panaro, so I got a nosebleed seat (last row of the balcony) for last night's performance.    He was really great (of course my favorite Phantom was in the Las Vegas production)--but great, nonetheless!

I had met Mr Panaro a couple of years ago--he appeared as a guest artist/mentor at a local high school. There was a program open to the public--an interview, Q&A and he sang three songs.  Here's one of them:

He signed autographs and posed for pictures after the high school show and couldn't have been nicer.  I brought the picture of him and me last night for him to autograph, waited a the stage door with about 8 other people, only to find out he had left through another door!

I also found out that DR elmore's friend, Sara Jean Ford, had walked by, but I hadn't recognized her.  She was terrific as Christine.

Hi, TCB!  Hope you're feeling well today.

Hi Kevin!  Enjoy New York.  I am not very good today.  Food poisoning or stomach flu; but as they say, "This too will pass."

As DR Ben said, I'm going to a wedding today (at 5:30 pm).

When I'm in NYC, it's my policy to see a show whenever possible, so I'm off to Mary Poppins.  I have seen it before, but didn't have a very good seat.
I was able to get a discount ticket in the 2nd row of the mezzanine.  Luckily the show starts at 1 pm, leaving me plenty of time to get ready for the wedding.

In less than an hour, the improbable Seattle Seahawks will take on the Da Bears to see which team will play for the NFC Championship next weekend.

Question for Kevin...............

Having seen the Las Vegas production of PHANOTM  a few times, did you find sitting through the extended version a bit long?

One of Joan Rivers' funnier bits the other night was about Meryl Streep starring in PRECIOUS.  "Now, that's acting."

We streamed the JOAN RIVERS:  A PIECE OF WORK documentary last night over Netflix.  Very enjoyable, but also strangely kind of sad.

After breakfast (and the real reason for the road trip), we got back into the car and headed back south to Ikea.  We were there for a little over an hour and my sister got three shelf units.

Guess what I'll be doing today. :P

;D

The drinks are all very pretty.

Had a very nice impromptu visit with Kevin H. last night. He came over to the apartment for a bit and then we went to dinner at Good Stuff Diner (we have been there before with Amy and Larry and Jose and others of the HHW gang). He then went off to see Phantom of the Opera with Hugh Panaro. Tomorrow he's going to a friend's son's wedding at Chelsea Piers.
