Thanks, DR Laura!  It's probably nothing, but I didn't want to take any chances...

SO, I have discovered that my payment woes really are as bad, if not worse, than I thought they would be.   The feds said that the funds to pay court appointed criminal lawyers ran out in February so they quit paying fee claims on Feb 23.  If a new continuing resolution passes, they will start paying the claims in the order they have been approved until the funding runs out then they don't pay until more funding is passed.  I found out this morning that my big fee claim made it to the first judge and is now on it's way to St Louis for approval by the second judge.  Since it hasn't been approved yet, it's going to be at the back of the line when the fee claims start being paid.

And, they project that there is no way they will have enough funds to pay the entire fiscal year even if a continuing resolution passes, so this means that any outstanding claims that haven't been paid in August will not be paid until a new budget takes effect in October or whenever the &*#6 people in Washington can agree on one.

I am glad I will not be depending on the feds for my income in the future, but this really makes things difficult.

I also found out that there are claims that were submitted in October that haven't been paid yet.  Crap.

Now I can't get Hacky Cough out of my head.  It would make a catchy jingle, I think.

As a former employee of the Dept of Labor who had to wait each year for approval for a couple of projects.....I hear you.

JRand, the employees are being paid, it's just the contractors who are fulfilling a constitutional duty who aren't.

They didn't pay my salary - they funded a couple of research projects that I headed - and brought Federal $$$ into the department.

Wow, Cillaliz. The government always paid us (the court reporters). It was the lawyers who didn't pay.

Payment resolution vibes to Cilla, how awful to not even know WHETHER, that it's not just a question of WHEN.

Thanks so much, Jrand.

It's time to head to the NYPL. I need to look up info on John Jerome Rooney (1866-1934), Irish-American Catholic poet and judge, and Paul West, Broadway book writer and lyricist who wrote The Pearl and the Pumpkin with W.W. denslow, illustrator of The Wizard Of Oz. I have a few other names and dates to track down as well.
