Maybe DR MBarnum has a few bottles he can spare. I think he uses it to make his face shiney.

I am in a kind of weirdly eclectic listening mood.  I started the day with that great old Mercury Living Presence Dorati reading of Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances and now I'm listening to the King's Singers do William Billings (do in only the nicest, most platonic sense).

Last night I watched a rather nice Spanish production of Alfano's Cyrano de Bergerac.  It's rather sad that he's only remembered for completing Turandot--the guy could write.  :)

They virtually reek of something. Genius may not be the word for it.

I would like to virtually salute our men and women of the Armed Forces, as well as remember my own dear, departed father, Major General Michael B. Kauffman.

As some of you may remember, my Dad was a technical advisor on PATTON (he was one of Patton's battalion commanders).  The character of "Coughlin" in the movie may or may not have been based, albeit slightly, on my father.  We were invited to the Seattle World Premiere, where my father was one of the VIPs.  The premiere had an honest to goodness pipe organ prelude and all the hoo-hah that used to happen in those days--the organist rose up on a big hydraulic lift, I remember.

When the movie started, my Dad leaned over and whispered, "That looks like Patton, but it sure as hell doesn't sound like him--he had the whiniest high voice you've ever heard."  :)

Yes, I know I've told that anecdote before, but that's never stopped me.

My father was in the battalion that Patton had to apologize for when he slapped the shell-shocked soldiers (yes, soldiers, there was actually more than one).  My Dad snuck a camera in and took a bunch of pictures with the camera nestled between his knees.  He showed them to me many times when I was growing up.  When I inherited my father's scrapbooks, all the pics were missing.  I later found a letter from him to an Army buddy of his--he had ripped all the pics out and sent them to this friend, who knows why.  My dreams of eBay riches vanished in the blink of an eye.  :)  I do have a really cool pic my Dad snapped, probably in either Northern Africa or Sicily of Eisenhower and Churchill coming out of a field tent together--what do you think they had been doing inside?  ;)

Good morning...

Today, my best gal, Sabrina, and I are heading over to Santa Cruz for a lovely day away.  Unfortunately, the weather isn't the best, but as long as it isn't raining, it's cool.  We are going to the Beach Boardwalk and will probably hit the downtown area.  There will be fried food eaten, sweets purchased, and hopefully sparkling conversation.  I say hopefully because every time we get together, we end up talking about the ex. - we were all friends even though I brought her into the relationship.  The ex, in fact, never said word one to her when he broke up- and this is a wonderful person who was over the house at least once a week, she watched the dogs whenever we needed it, and was a great help to us when needed.  Not one word, I tell you.  I feel bad for her.  She's wanted to call him, but what would she say?   I know what I'd love her to say, but talking to the ex is a waste of anyone's time and I don't wish it on anyone.

On that note (an ALW D-Flat), I have a load of towels in the laundry and am going to walk over to Starbucks.  (7 minutes door to door, can't beat that - ON FOOT!!!)

Speaking of coming attractions, I'm happy to report that it looks like my brother-in-law has finally secured permanent employment at a major L.A. trailer producing firm, after several years of having to freelance in the wake of the economic downturn.  We're really excited and happy for him, it's been a very tough couple of years.

Yesterday DR Jose wrote:
Quote
DR Jennifer - A waffle is basically a piece of bread. Fried chicken and a piece of bread is not "odd". -I actually like fried chicken and pancakes. -And since pancakes and waffles can be made from the same batter, well...

Is "fried chicken and biscuits" odd to you too?

I personally don't find waffles and bread similar.  But i do find fried chicken and pancakes very odd as well.

I don't find fried chicken and biscuits odd. Although biscuits are not very common here. Although actually neither is fried chicken (other than KFC).

My sister just sent me these:   ;D

MENSA  INVITATIONAL

The Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once again invited readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new  definition.

Here are the winners:

1. Cashtration(n.):  The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.

2. Ignoranus : A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

3. Intaxicaton  : Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you  realize it was your money to start  with.

4. Reintarnation :  Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

5. Bozone ( n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

6. Foreploy : Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.

7. Giraffiti :  Vandalism spray-painted very, very high

8. Sarchasm : The gulf  between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

9. Inoculatte : To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

10. Osteopornosis : A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

11. Karmageddon : It's like, when everybody is  sending off all these  really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.

12. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are  good for you.

13. Glibido :  All talk and no action.

14. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

15. Arachnoleptic Fit (n.):  The frantic dance performed just after you've  accidentally walked through a spider web.

16. Beelzebug (n.): Satan, in the form of a mosquito, gets into your  bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

17. Caterpallor ( n.):  The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.

The  Washington Post has also published the winning submissions to its yearly contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words.

And the winners are:

1. Coffee, n. The  person upon whom one coughs.

2. Flabbergasted, adj.  Appalled by discovering how much weight one has gained.

3. Abdicate,  v. To give up all hope of ever having a flat  stomach.

4. Esplanade, v.  To attempt an explanation while drunk.

5. Willy-nilly,  adj. Impotent.

6. Negligent, adj.  Absentmindedly answering the door when wearing only a nightgown.

7. Lymph, v. To walk with a lisp.

8. Gargoyle, n. Olive-flavored mouthwash.

9. Flatulence, n. Emergency vehicle that picks up  someone who has been run over by a steamroller.

10. Balderdash, n. A rapidly receding hairline.

11. Testicle, n. A  humorous question on an exam.

12. Rectitude, n. The formal, dignified bearing adopted by proctologists.

13. Pokemon, n. A Rastafarian proctologist.

14. Oyster, n. A person who sprinkles his conversation with Yiddishisms.

15. Frisbeetarianism, n. The belief that, after death, the soul flies up onto  the roof and gets stuck there.

16. Circumvent, n. An opening in the front of boxer shorts worn by Jewish men
