TCB, today's update is basically the water is starting to arrive.  Things are slowly flooding and not eveyrone is ready for it.  I was out and about today. i did take photos, but just haven't felt like posting them yet.  I'm in a Siouxland Flooding Facebook group that gives updates, addresses of people who need help etc.

It's just a weird feeling to know that the flood is coming, but as you stand 3 blocks from the river it's hard to belive it will really get there.   The rumors have been rampant of dams that are shaky, of all sorts of strange things.  We get offical debunking of the rumors, but with the prep going on, it's really hard to believe that it's not going to be a lot worse than they are telling us.  Once the water gets here it will stay at the flooded levels until at least August and maybe September.  It's going to be really strange.

Today we heard of the first fatality from the preparation.   It's been in the 90s and some people are just pushing it way too hard.  A 34 year old father of 2 went home to take a nap and never woke up.  They are attributing it to the heat and over exertion.  At least that's what I heard, one can't believe anything they've heard around here, lol

Vixmom, all I did today was talk to people and take photos.  I am sharing the photos with the flood group and they seem to be appreciating them, so I'll put more up soon.

People are smiling because they are fighting the flood.  We have been given notice that the Army Corps of Engineers is going to flood us.  There are many conversations that will likely get quite heated, but right now, people have very little time to try to save their homes and businesses and for the towns to fortify the water supply and the electrical grid and power plant.  It's really serious business.  It isn't just a row or two of sandbags, it's 4-10 foot high levees completely surrounding buildings.   They estimate something like 16 million sand bags are being used along the Missouri.

We're having an honest to goodness thunder storm right now.  Those are a rare commodity in the Pacific NW.

I have made it (barely) through my gauntlet of a weekend.  I conducted the Pops concert, hosted Rave in the Nave, and then presided over today's Music Sunday festivities at the church I work for.  I believe tomorrow will be a day of rest.

Today's photos, not too exciting, but the water is rising slowly.  Although a maintenance guy at the casino told me it's 8 inches deeper today than yesterday

As quoted in the Omaha World Herald:
"Over the next 10 days, the amount of water being discharged will reach 150,000 cfs. That's 50 percent more than flows over Niagara Falls in the summer. It's enough water to cover a football field 4 feet deep in one second."

Don't know if that's true, I copied it from a group post, lol.  I know the 150,000 cubic feet per second is true.

Here's an example of what people are doing. Got this from the flood group.  I think DV is Dakota Valley.

Quote
Just want to say a special thanks to volunteers tonight. I was working in the DV area this weekend. There was a widow who had given her home on the lake with a walk out basement up for loss. Today about 75 people showed up and built a 12 sandbag wall for her. I think they were from Sioux Falls. I was working by myself in the front of a house when a 10 rugby players from Storm Lake hop out of a truck and start helping. With thier amazing help we finished 2 houses today. THANKS TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS THIS WEEKEND!!!

As they say  "But we'll give you our shirt and a back to go with it if your crops should happen to die..."  or of the Army Corps decides to flood your town.....
