Re Blige: I'm of two minds here.  On the one hand, this smacks of nervous suits at the network, bringing in stars with the right demographics to draw in viewers who otherwise wouldn't view.

What doesn't match, in this case, is that the "stars" are usually relegated to presenting.  Blige is performing.  This suggests that she, herself, is interested in the Tonys.  I'll be interested in hearing her perform.

With all due respect for your schizophrenic feelings, DR SWW (because I share them), I will point out to you and the other dear readers who are concerned about Miss Bllige's appearance on the Antoinette Perry Awards broadcast that the woman has been a focal part of the PBS (Channel 13) advertising in NYC for some time.  So, though her music and her demographics are strictly hip-hop, the lady has expressed concern for more high-brow culture in the past.

Though at least when Alex Cohen coaxed Cher onto a Tony broadcast, she had already appeared on Broadway, which Miss Blige has not.  That was a rule that I thought would remain unbroken in terms of people appearing on the Tony's.  Ah well.....

Jane, I'll have my mom get a picture of it. She doesn't let me use the camera. It all has to do with a still life of a can of Cherry Coke that just mysteriously appeared on a roll of film a few years ago. Although my friend Vespi said it was very artistic.

Yes, it's for real. But it's a dry heat. Whatever!

The official temperature is only 109, but that was the thermometer outside our door.

I've been E&T for a few days, because I was forced to fire people at work, and then take over their shifts.  Nothing quite puts me in as foul a mood as sixteen to eighteen hour days.  But the good gnus is I hired two people today, so tomorrow should be my LAST double-day.

Did I mention that I started KRITZER TIME last night? Well, I did. I'm about 25 pages into it right now... I'll probably knock out another 25 tonight.

I read it in one (count it, one!) sitting.

Well, Jason, those cookies I made yesterday met up with an unfortunate incident involving an open can of Cherry Coke and my dad who, apparently, will eat anything. So I made a new batch today. We didn't have any more chocolate chips so I cut up a Cadbury bar, and may I say: Yummy!!!

I also hope you appreciate them because the oven heated up the whole house and it was already 114 degrees.

It's nice here in Indiana mid 70s today. As for the Tony's all I will say is I think Avenue Q will get the nod on at least one award if not two. To not acknowledge it would upset a lot of people. I'm not sure which awards they'll get but I predict Ave Q getting two Tony's though I am not sure in which categories they will win.

I am from the Indianapolis area.

I would also like to send out my condolences to DR Charles and his wife, Julieanne. It's hard losing a pet, they really are a part of the family.

DR Jason, only some of us are good at that stuff. I am not.  :) I was the captain of the Spell Bowl team for two years when I was in high school though.

DR Joey: I tried the spelling bee in seventh grade. I was doing really well, and this was way before I ever dreamt of being an actor, and I was really nervous and I totally misspelled "SECRET"--I forgot the "R." I'll never forget how embarrassed I was. Oh, well...the next year I got in the choir and I played Uncle Henry in THE WIZARD OF OZ. They added a song ("(I've Been Workin') On The Railroad") just for me because I had such a pretty voice. :P The night before the show opened, I fell on an iron spike and cut my knee open. I had to get 8 stitches, but the show must go on, right? So with lots of pain pills, a cane and a little bit of ACE bandaging, I was the sleeper hit of the show.

A Nose for New York
[/size]

Just ran an errand and, since it's too lovely a day to head right back, I walked past the Kosuth and Tilden statues and then it hit me: the smell of tall grass.  A particularly summery smell, and it was here in my own neighborhood.  The last time I sensed such a thing was on Ward's Island, a part of New York that Nobody Ever Visits (which is probably why I like it so much).

It got me thinking back to DR Danise's description of her trip.  I wish I'd done a better job of convincing her:

1) Ride the subways
2) Spend as much time outside the theatre district as possible
3) Don't pick the Milford Plaza - your cheaper choice couldn't have been worse

but the smells.  Ah, the smells.

Did you get to Park Avenue?  No part of Park Avenue smells bad; the residents wouldn't stand for it.  There are flower beds in the middle of every block from the fifties to the nineties, and so, often, it smells of these flowers.

I know you'd a plan to go to Joe's Pub.  And there's plenty of interest nearby, including St. Mark's Place.  I've not smelled garbage there, but I've smelled incense, and pot, and it's a feast of all sorts of Youth Culture sensations.  One place that DOES smell awful is the little street behind the Ukranian church near McSorley's, the oldest pub in continuous use in New York.  135 years ago (I think), it was there.  35 years ago (I think), it was there, but you wouldn't have been allowed in because it didn't admit women.

Many a time I'm walking in a random neighborhood in New York, and suddenly fumes from a bakery will wash over me.  As they say "smells are free."  (And do nothing to your waistline.)  On my block, we've a Thai restaurant, and Indian restaurant and an American place with some Cajun items - and that's just my side of the street.  Actually, I'm kind of tired of those smells.

And that's to say nothing of interior smells.  Saks has its own smell.  Does Lord & Taylor?  I don't like Bloomingdales' smell, lament the long-gone Bonwit Teller scent, and was surprised to find Barney's has none.  Macy's stinks, as far as I'm concerned.

The Fulton Market, mentioned in Wonderful Town, is still in operation, and, while that's not a good aroma, I find it fun to be connected to a musical set in the thirties and written in the fifties.  And wander north from there, and you're lost in Chinatown, as I was on my wedding day, taking in scents that are exotic and undefinable to the occidental nose.

I wish I had seen errr.... make that smelled....NYC through your nose (so to speak!  :) ) DR Noel.  Perhaps another time, if I ever do make it up there again.

I also meant to say that I didn't hate Wonderful Town.  It just wasn't exactly my favorite either. I'd go see it again if someone else wanted to go.   I just wouldn't pick it to go see again by myself.

Well folks, I have to say,   if I were ever to decide on suicide (not that I AM), we can safely say my means to my end would NOT be death by starvation.  I get to hungry.  I’ve had to fast all day today for another round of tests tomorrow and right now my keyboard is looking pretty good.  A little salt, a little pepper.  It has possibilities...   So does my chair!

You know it’s bad when you envy what your feeding the dogs.  So send good vibes that I survive  the next hours (I’ve got to do this until after eleven tomorrow morning) and pass the salt!  I wonder, what goes with stuffed chair?   :)

I'm trying not to remember the wonderful NY strip steak I had last week on this day.  And the mashed potatos.  Did I say I didn't eat the carrots?  I could make an exception just now.

And please do NOT mention the Mississippi Mud Pie.    :'(

Sandra, I had forgotten about the Swedish Chef hat.  I saw a Danish Chef hat and a few others someplace when I was in SLC.  I'm trying to remember if there was a Swedish hat as well.  I think so.

BTW, I was cruzing the board and couldn't find my review of the last book.  I did post it here, didn't I?

See? Classy. We don't know what the red carpet was for. We just happened upon it and whipped out the Swedish Chef hat and decided to take a picture. The security guards look thrilled, don't they? And notice the lady bending over in the window. I bet she didn't know anyone was taking a picture that would wind up on the Internet.

Charles Pogue--I'm so very sorry about Cully!!  My deepest condolences to you and Julieanne.

But what I DO have is a rooting interest for Avenue Q.  Here's a show done by people who've never been on Broadway before.  It's not based on a famous movie or book or a famous person's life.  It has a low budget.  And it's funny.  Amazingly funny.  You can hear some of those songs a thousand times and still laugh.  And, top of all that, it's moving.  A show with real heart.  Just the sort of work, I feel, that should be rewarded.

Well-said!   While I admired "Wicked" as a stunning piece of stagecraft, and mostly enjoyed the score and performances, I too felt it lacked the heart of "Avenue Q."  Then again, it really IS apples and oranges in this case.   I just want David to trump Galiath, I guess.

Jay--Thank you for the "De-Lovely" review.  I'm hoping I like it a little better than you did, but I'm skeptical, unfortunately.

My Tony Predictions (which reflect who I think WILL, and not always who SHOULD win)...they're pretty much the same as those of Jason

Actor in a Musical: Hugh Jackman
Actress in a Musical: Idina Menzel
Featured Actor in a Musical: Michael Cerveris
Featured Actress in a Musical: Anika Noni Rose
Best Musical: Wicked
Best Revival: Assassins
Best Score: Wicked
Best Book of a Musical: Caroline or Change
Scenic Design: Wicked
Costume Design: Wicked
Lighting: Wicked
Director of a Musical: Joe Mantello
Actor in a Play: Jefferson Mays
Actress in a Play: Phylicia Rashad
Featured Actor in a Play: Brian F. O'Bryne
Featured Actress in a Play: Margo Martindale (Audra could win, but she has so many Tonys already)
Revival of a Play: A Raisin in the Sun
Best Play: I Am My Own Wife
Director of a Play: Moises Kauffman
Choreography: Kathleen Marshall
Orchestrations: Wicked

I'm off to watch "City of Lost Children!"

That actually may help her. If she wins this year, she will be one of only a few women to have won four Tony Awards, and she's so young that she will probably win a few more...watch out for her.

Sandra, you look stunning.  It really makes a fashion statement.

Meant to say welcome to Joey!  Happy, Happy postings!

I have to get back in the habit of having Word open while I read posts so I can jot down comments as I read.

As for the Tonys.  I really can't vote on anything.  Not having seen all of the shows, it just wouldn't be fair.

Night all.

Those cookies sound yummy.  What kind of chips do you usually bake with?
Very classy photo. :)

MBarnum, most of my dolls are porcelain. I have one from Germany that was hand carved from wood.  I have two Heidi Ott dolls fromSwitzerland.  I can’t remember the details on my other dolls.

I actually do hope she wins it...I love me some Audra.  How cool would it be to have FOUR Tony's when you're not even 40, half for musicals and half for straight plays??
