Leslie Kritzer was magical in a reading of LETTER TO HARVEY MILK a few weeks back, in which she starred with Judy Blazer and Jeff Keller.

I am back from THE BLUE FLOWER, which is an experiment in film and live theatre in which neither wins many points. It has an excellent cast, but it's poor Brecht - at one point there's very literal qute from "Mack the Knife," making me wonder if the Weill Foundation is aware of this, but it's like watching a lot of skilled theatre professionals masturbate and make much ado about nothing. The story, about a "famous artist" (1899-1955), seems to also be a history of Europe from Mayerling to WW 2, but the music all sounds like it was written this morning on a country western fix, with lots of slide guitar, power ballads, a couple of beautiful ensembles, and a lot of unintelligible lyrics. The 8-piece band was quite good and some of the arrangements very interesting.

The problem is a story that jumps around in time about four Germans whom one never has an emotional investment with. Too much is narrated, too much is on film - I was amazed at a lot of synchronization between band, actors and film , but at times the film is more involving than the staging and it gets in the way of the staging. I wanted to like it, and I was very moved by the last couple of scenes, but the pretentious "bug" cabaret in Act Two, after an equally ridiculous Dada cabaret scene in Act One, made we want to leave immediately. The first act ended on a beautiful lament, but I didn't give a single damn about the plight of the character singing it.

I kept waiting for someone to ask, "how did you like our Brecht parody?"
Yeah, but did you like it?  ;D

I don't know, but I don't think so! Mostly pretentious twaddle. One of the posters on Allthatchat said it was great and pushed the envelope. Only if the envelope is marked "Go directly to jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200."

And now I'm in rehearsal, and we are stumbling-through (on purpose) Act One.

How many performances are there for THE BOYS?

Just five: Friday, two on Saturday, two on Sunday.

...and then I fly to Los Angeles on Monday morning, and start rehearsals with bk at LACC Monday evening. (Whew!)

How long will you be in L.A.?

Five Weeks!

DR Jose, I am all informed about the Boys 1938 materials.

DR Elmore - So does this mean we're meeting for a drink tomorrow night? ;)

It depends on how my rehearsal goes!

And... After we finished running all the songs with cast, we still had 20 minutes to run through the Entr'acte, Bows and Exit Music. In other words: That was a real nice Sitzprobe. :)

DR Elmore - I'll keep you posted too. I'm actually covering a rehearsal from 2:30-6:30 tomorrow, so I may end up making a very early evening of it since I have a very early Tuesday morning ahead of me.

As for THE BLUE FLOWER - I believe I saw the second NYC incarnation of the show a few years ago. I liked it. It sounds like it went through quite the transformation during its most recent run in Boston.

DR Ginny, do you like PAN AM?    I think I've only missed one episode and I'm about to give up on it.  I just don't care enough about the characters or something.  I keep waiting for it to take off but it just doesn't seem to be able to get off the ground...

Vibes to all who need or want them.  I've had a terrible head ache today.  Nothing was helping.  I finally took a really hot shower and have been using the heat pad.  It's better, not great but better.

Back from stuff.  Went to the partay, and it was fine as those things go - saw a lot of nice folks.  Then I ate some dinner at the Coral Cafe in Burbank, which is becoming a favorite of mine.  I had to eat mild stuff as I was having tummy issues earlier this day.  Then I came home and worked on our rehearsal sched and stuff.

I gave up on it about 20 minutes into the first episode.   ;D

Tonight, we had a very good "Hound" performance.  The audience, though small (about 12-15) were quite responsive and enjoyed it.  Only one weekend left and the it's over.
