Good morning, all! It was a horrible night of unsettling dreams and I slept quite fitfully, up and down several times, counting the minutes till the alarm went off. My last dream was a pre-World War 2 one, in Germany, and I was in a quintet of singers/band/cabaret act, I don't remember now. I emember little of the details but an escape was necessary because we had been told we were going to be killed by dogs following the performance. Most of this dream dealt with the dilemma of going to this death willingly, making an escape, or finding an alternate form of suicide to thwart our planned murder. There was a search for someone with cyanice, and my last memory of the dream is holding a small packet that said "Lye for Women" and saying, this is going to be painful.

So, speaking of painful, today I will be seated at Toyland, taping orchestra parts together and listening to music on the office iTunes. I will pull a few CDs to take with me, and head out within the next thirty minutes. It will be a long day.

DR Danise, I raved a bit about GRIMM and oNCE UPON A TIME when the seasons began last year, and I even posted about my enthusiasm for them on Facebook. This was during the period when you were away, so I'm sure that's hpw you missed my comments. I don't recall any other DR posting about watching either for some time.

TOD:

I hate dubbed films. Apart from the words not matching the actor's lips, the dialogue has an unconvincing "dead" studio sound. Fortunately films never seem to be dubbed now (at least not in the UK).

The first subtitled film I saw (I remember very well having to read the words on the screen for the very first time) was THE WAGES OF FEAR when I was 8 years old - my parents were keen on foreign language films so I saw quite a lot of them thereafter.

I can't remember the first dubbed film I saw. It would have been a foreign language film which was popular and therefore was given a general release. I didn't see them in the cinema but FISTFUL OF DOLLARS and FIST OF FURY (Bruce Lee) were two popular dubbed films of course.

Went out for breakfast and had scrambled egg, bacon, mushroom, tomatoe and toast. That was their minimum breakfast - I certainly didn't want the mega version!

Went into town to Stanfords to get a map of Kiev for my visit to Ukraine next week. Stanfords is the place for maps. They've been around a long time and claim to have the world's largest stock of maps and travel books. I've been buying from them for the past 50 years.

DR JOHNG - I have a friend who knows two of the children of Mr Cameron Mitchell up in Canada. They - especially Cam, Jr. or Chip, now and then indulge in acting. Camille made a couple of movies - one with her father and brother - a silly sci-fi film that was featured on MST3K at one time....Space Mutiny. Two other children of the marriage did not go into acting.

Their mother was Cameron's first wife and was the heiress to a LARGE Canadian meat packing fortune.

Cameron met some floozy on a movie set in the mid fifties, divorced his wife, sort of, and married the other woman and had more children......but his first wife was still in love with him, and they maintained a civil relationship for the children.

During Cameron's last illness, he returned to Canada, and lived with his first wife who paid all of his costly medical bills.

Through my friend, for some reason, both Cam, Jr, and Camille sent me autographed photos...which are very nice to have, although I don't know why.

Board is still a bit wonky this morning. At least I didn't lose my post.

Everyone stay cool today. A high of 93 is predicted for my territory.....and of course I have to work. Oh well. When I get too hot, I go outside for a bit.....and when I come back inside....even our air conditioning feels cool......

Saturday morning greetings! We had a great time last night in River City! We met DR Jose in the Catwalk Cafe at the Arena Stage complex for a light supper and pre-show visit. After the performance he came to our seats and escorted us out by way of backstage, where we met Kate Baldwin and the young man who plays Tommy. He just graduated from Michigan, so we exchanged "Go, Blues."

There's a lot to love about MUSIC MAN. Knowing ahead of time that the costumes were an issue, I was able to kind of ignore them and enjoy the acting, the singing, the dancing, and (especially) the band. Kate and Burke Moses are wonderful, as are the rest of the cast. It was such fun to realize that it was DR Jose playing the piano lesson and the cross-hand piece.

I'd never seen a musical in the round and, seldom, in such an intimate space. It changes the experience and the acting becomes very important. Our backstage visit helped us appreciate the staging even more than we had from out front.

We had a great evening!

Morning all! I have to say that I slept wonderfully well last night! The new Tempur Pedic SuprimaPillow was HEAVEN and well worth every penny ($79.00). I don't mind paying more for something if it helps your health and Lord knows we all need a restful night's sleep or we can't function the next day! The other pillow is going back to the store today.

The curve in the pillow fit my back and neck perfectly when I laid on my back and when I turned on my side it was just firm enough. All in all it gets a five star rating from me!

Speaking of sleeping and therefore dreams, you really have some humdingers, DR Elmore! May that one NEVER come true in any way, shape or form!

Sadly, $2100 is but a fender-bender these days. I've had three of those with current car (which I still consider my "new" car, now exactly ten years old but well cared for), the resulting repairs of all having been paid for directly by The Other Guy's Insurance -- happy to say (knocking wood, etc.).

TOD: Subtitles, absolutely. But I have no objection to enjoying dubbed versions of campy old horror films, westerns, etc.

First subtitles were probably Bergman films on 16mm in college years (I've always recalled "The Magician" being the first). I learned right off the bat to appreciate the sound and rhythm of the original language, and the overall ambiance, while reading the (hopefully good) subtitles. This is ingrained in me, something I've always been thankful for.

I'm thinking "Bird With the Crystal Plumage" is a contender for first dubbed film seen in a theater, though it's likely I saw dubbed films in earlier years without being aware of it. No, I take that back! Let's go back another decade, to the AIP release of "Black Sunday". Yeah, that's it.
