TOD - subtitles.  We even use them when we're watching movies in English...

Those "international" horror films, though -- didn't they always have to be dubbed for each market?  And doesn't that go for the spaghetti westerns?  I'm not certain where the lines are drawn.

TOD: Subtitles only. I think I was about 7 or 8 when the afternoon Million Dollar Movie or whatever it was called played Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast with subtitles. It remains one of the best movie experiences of my life.

I cannot stand the way that Fellini just shot his actors and then dubbed in dialogue later. It's irritating to see their lips move and watch dialogue come out that's not entirely in sync. And I don't know why that should be. My family in Germany won't watch a movie with subtitles. They only want dubbed

Same here.  They can be a great help.  And sometimes, if you don't want to gloss over every little thing being said, as in "The Wire", they're essential.

DR John G, he was tired last night.  They have 2 shows today and tomorrow and everyone is trying to figure out how to dodge the traffic jams and the Rolling Thunder motorcycle parade.  I think he's really looking forward to having Monday off!

But, he was gracious as always and it was great to see him!

It's Stanfords without an apostrophe, so there's no way anyone could get confused between the two  :)

There seems to have been a long tradition in Italy of shooting silent and dubbing dialogue in post production (not sure if that's still done today). For some reason German citizens seem to prefer their foreign language films to be dubbed.

TOD:

I'm not sure what the first fully subtitled movie I saw was.  But, it might have been WILD STRAWBERRIES.

I went through an Ingmar Bergman phase when I was in college.  In fact, I saw a lot of subtitled films back then.

Finally, I saw LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD; thought it was the biggest piece of S#%T I had ever seen in my life and I stopped going to foreign films for years.

There are a lot for foreign films that I like, but I hate reading subtitles, so it has to be very special for me to watch it.

And, I do not like dubbed versions.

Sorry I ended up being E & T last evening.  I was just typing a post, when we suddenly got a huge flash of lightening and an immediate roll of thunder.  At first I hoped it was just a passing storm, but that was not to be.

Good morning, all! It was a horrible night of unsettling dreams and I slept quite fitfully, up and down several times, counting the minutes till the alarm went off. My last dream was a pre-World War 2 one, in Germany, and I was in a quintet of singers/band/cabaret act, I don't remember now. I emember little of the details but an escape was necessary because we had been told we were going to be killed by dogs following the performance. Most of this dream dealt with the dilemma of going to this death willingly, making an escape, or finding an alternate form of suicide to thwart our planned murder. There was a search for someone with cyanice, and my last memory of the dream is holding a small packet that said "Lye for Women" and saying, this is going to be painful.

So, speaking of painful, today I will be seated at Toyland, taping orchestra parts together and listening to music on the office iTunes. I will pull a few CDs to take with me, and head out within the next thirty minutes. It will be a long day.

DR Danise, I raved a bit about  GRIMM and oNCE UPON A TIME when the seasons began last year, and I even posted about my enthusiasm for them on Facebook. This was during the period when you were away, so I'm sure that's hpw you missed my comments. I don't recall any other DR posting about watching either for some time.

I'll stop back from Toyland!

I have been watching GRIMM all-season, but I missed the season finale.  And I have mentioned GRIMM to you on several occasions, elmore.

DR JOHNG - I have a friend who knows  two of  the children of Mr Cameron Mitchell up in Canada.  They - especially Cam, Jr. or Chip, now and then indulge in acting.  Camille made a couple of movies - one with her father and brother - a silly sci-fi film that was featured on MST3K at one time....Space Mutiny.  Two other children of the marriage did not go into acting.

Their mother was Cameron's first wife and was the heiress to a LARGE Canadian meat packing fortune.

Cameron met some floozy on a movie set in the mid fifties, divorced his wife, sort of, and married the other woman and had more children......but his first wife was still in love with him, and they maintained a civil relationship for the children.

During Cameron's last illness, he returned to Canada, and lived with his first wife who paid all of his costly medical bills.

Through my friend, for some reason, both Cam, Jr, and Camille sent me autographed photos...which are very nice to have, although I don't know why.

Why would anyone think that you would want and autographed photo of either Cam jr. or Camille?

Morning all!  I have to say that I slept wonderfully well last night!  The new Tempur Pedic SuprimaPillow was HEAVEN and well worth every penny ($79.00).  I don't mind paying more for something if it helps your health and Lord knows we all need a restful night's sleep or we can't function the next day!  The other pillow is going back to the store today.

The curve in the pillow fit my back and neck perfectly when I laid on my back and when I turned on my side it was just firm enough.   All in all it gets a five star rating from me!

Speaking of sleeping and therefore dreams, you really have some humdingers, DR Elmore!  May that one NEVER come true  in any way, shape or form!

Vibes to Dear VixMom!  Just glad no one was hurt.

So glad you had a great evening, DR Ginny.  i've never seen any play in the round.

Before I lost all of this weight, every show I saw was in  the round.

TOD:  Subtitles, absolutely.  But I have no objection to enjoying dubbed versions of campy old horror films, westerns, etc.

First subtitles were probably Bergman films on 16mm in college years (I've always recalled "The Magician" being the first).  I learned right off the bat to appreciate the sound and rhythm of the original language, and the overall ambiance, while reading the (hopefully good) subtitles.  This is ingrained in me, something I've always been thankful for.

I'm thinking "Bird With the Crystal Plumage" is a contender for first dubbed film seen in a theater, though it's likely I saw dubbed films in earlier years without being aware of it.  No, I take that back!  Let's go back another decade, to the AIP release of "Black Sunday".  Yeah, that's it.

BLACK SUNDAY.  Is that the one with the blimp?

First film withsubtitles was WILD STRAWBERRIES.  Yawn!  I still remember that the clock had no face, and then the man turned around and he had no face.  I guess it meant something.

Everyone stay cool today.  A high of 93 is predicted for my territory.....and of course I have to work.  Oh well.  When I get too hot, I go outside for a bit.....and when I come back inside....even our air conditioning feels cool......

We had a very low (for us) predicted high of 93, and the cool air is heaven.
