Here's an interesting question... Does anyone know if the Overture that is printed in the vocal score and licensed when you do Hello, Dolly! has ever been recorded in its entirety?

No, it has not. It doesn't match the overture used on any recordngs, either. The original show had no overture, and I believe that was thrown together by Tams-Witmark if you wanted to use one. Both revivals I've seen used something new.

The same is true of "Ribbons Down My Back." I think the only recording of the arrangement in the vocal score may be the London cast with Mary Martin.

Yes, that's right about "Ribbons"  When we did the show back in 1997, we were able to obtain the revival (recorded by bk) version of "Ribbons" from Jerry himself.  (along with Love, Look in My Window) - as we know, he was very happy with that arrangement as it's always what he wanted it to be.

What is "Love, Look in My Window?"

One of the two songs added for Merman.

Oh, I see.

That and World Take Me Back were written at the beginning of the process when Jerry Herman tried to woo Ethel into playing the role.  She was asked before Carol Channing was.  Since both of their voices are very different, when Ethel declined and Carol took the roll, the two songs were put on a shelf as they did not fit Carol's voice.   I think the quote was "Carol simply could not sell a ballad"  or something like that.

When Ethel FINALLY took over the roll in 1970, both songs were reinstated in the score.  I'm not sure where "World Take Me Back" was added because it is much like "Before The Parade Passes By" but I know "Love Look in My Window" goes right before the monologue before "Before the Parade Passes By"

That all said, Jerry's autobiography is a great read. If you haven't read it, you should make tracks to do so.

Surprise!  Surprise!  The early morning airshow was, indeed, only the rehearsal.

T.O.D.

Ask BK Day

I enjoy watching the videos on YouTube.  I am wondering why, with all our technical advances, in so many of the videos the voices don't match the picture?  I can't imagine that they were that way on the source viideo / DVD.

There shouldn't be a problem in the upload process, so if there are synch problems it's probably happened before that.

Oy. Those planes are SO LOUD. I love to see them, but, dang, they can scare you if you don't know what they are.

One day I heard, the planes, and I looked out and saw two military jets escorting another larger jet right over my house. They weren't heading toward the airport, so I didn't know what was going on. It looked like a plane was being forced to land somewhere. (It turned out to be a military funeral.)

Made the Sondheim fixes - he caught stuff my eye never would have caught, so that's good.  Had a couple of tuna sandwiches, heard some more mixes (three more), and am now watching a motion picture.

Chas, re the sixteen vs. eight track - I now think this is how they recorded it and there is nothing else.

I see that "1776" is about to start on TCM.  I'm recording it but think I'll watch some of it, at least, now.

thanks for posting this. I got the DVR set just in time

I have the DVD.  I prefer the extended laserdisc version, but no one in my family will watch it...it's too long.  I don't care.  I like it. :D

DR George, is there any way to transfer the LD to DVD (hint, hint)?

Possible...very possible. ;)

Depending, of course, on the condition of the laserdisc.  It's very old and I have another laserdisc that is already compromised.  But if it's good, it'll work.  I already have my laserdisc player hooked up to my DVD burner.

While I'm asking for the moon, do you have the complete SHOW BOAT set with 1929, 1936 and 1952 films?

I watched Blythe Danner sing "He Plays the Violin" with William Daniels and Howard da Silva.  I have now done my patriotic duty.

Apparently, the U.S. Air Force has painted a big red X on the roof of our apartment building.  All of the jets seem to be using us as a staging area for firing their afterburners.

I made potato salad and am trying to decide what I'm going to make for dinner.  the last load of clothes is in the dryer.   I'm not really celebrating today.  My Joplin nephews and family minus my sister and bro in law are all going to the lake for about 5-6 days.   I'm going up tomorrow to help mom get ready and will stay until Sunday.

there are at least three fireworks displays here tonight.  One at the country club a couple blocks from my house, one at the baseball game and one by the river.   There is a spot fairly near to my house where you are on the top of a big hill and can see the fireworks from all directions.   If I can find my bug spray, I may go up there after sunset.   Or, if it's still as hot as it is now, I may just walk out into the street behind my house and watch the country club display....or, i may just sit here

E&T ALERT!

I'll be driving up to Rochester NY tomorrow for a showing of ROBOT MONSTER in 3-D, to be hosted by 3-D guru Bob Furmanek.  I shan't be logging in till late in the day.

http://dryden.eastmanhouse.org/films/2012/06/robot-monster/

Should be nice little trip, all told, considering I'll be passing through some scenic parts of NY state for the first time.  Back home on Friday.

Hey, what fun! I wish I could go! The little boy who stars in ROBOT MONSTER is a dear friend of mine. I interviewed him for Classic Images a few years back and I have had the good fortune to visit with he and his wife. In fact, they stopped in my town 2 years back while they were driving from Washington back to California, and we all had a wonderful lunch together. I chat with his wife quite a lot on Facebook. they are both swell people!

Chas, you mentioned having an egg on a hamburger.  Do you fry the egg by itself and then put it on as a topping, or do cook the egg on top of the burger while you are cooking the meat?

Not something I've made myself, but it was fried separately, sunny side up (or maybe over easy, but the yolk is definitely soft), and placed on top of the burger right there along with cheese, onion, etc.  And it's just as messy as it sounds.  But SO delicious.

I've never understood the appeal of an egg on a hamburger.  It just seems too weird to me. :-\

It is very yummy!
