I think I shall try to find my FOLLIES LP in anticipation of the new recording.  I have never had the show on CD in any form.

Yesterday's TOD -- which I still think is a great one, but I find surprisingly hard to respond in a meaningful way.  Most of this is 1950s/1960s shows because in the years when I was truly wearing out cast albums, that's what I was listening to.  Listening habits changed over the years, but now I find the balance tilting back toward shows.  Original B'way cast unless noted.

MOST FAVORITE / LISTENED TO:
Cabaret
Camelot
Evita
Fiddler on the Roof
Gypsy
Hello, Dolly!
The King and I - 1960s Lincoln Center because it included the ballet
Kismet
Kiss of the Spider Woman - Chita
Li'l Abner
The Music Man - grew up on the soundtrack first, then OBC
My Fair Lady - B'way and London
On the Town - Bernstein 1960s re-recording
Show Boat - 1960s Lincoln Center
South Pacific
West Side Story - soundtrack, then OBC

Lots of others, too, but had to draw the line somewhere.

BEST SOUNDING:
I remember thinking Cabaret was a great one, but I'd only begun to listen for quality of sound around that time.  However, I'd always liked the ones on Columbia, which is particularly easy to identify now with BK's comments re Goddard Lieberson in the new book fresh in my mind.  Not only the sound, but the gatefolds and most everything else about the albums.

LEAST FAVORITE:
Annie Get Your Gun (don't remember why)
Hard to recall least favorites.  Have to think about this.

WORST SOUNDING:
Hello, Dolly! - RCA Dynagroove LP, inner groove distortion, you name it.
Man of La Mancha  - LP sound always irritated me, don't remember why.
Promises, Promises  - LP - same, especially out-of-tune stuff - all the things BK's CD fixes.

Here is the photo album from "The Curious Savage" from the local newspaper.  The picture on the front page is the one with "John Thomas" the doll being held up to kiss Mrs. Savage.

http://www.bannergraphic.com/gallery/12315

So....a little toy that is 50 years old - that thought its life was over......that had set in a room by itself for years.....had been shoved in a box and traveled across the country in a truck.....finds itself a STAGE STAR.....and on the front of the newspaper!!! I am sure he enjoys the lights, and I hope he doesn't get stage fright when he sees the big audience tomorrow night.

Jack, great photos, but, forgive me for saying it, Mrs. Savage has the world's worst wig.  Maybe it looks better on stage.

Curious, but not really savage.  I just got an e-mail from Direct TV (which I have) saying that the all-new season of DAMAGES premieres tongiht, but that it can only be seen on Direct TV.  Why would that be?

I had never seen one like him DR DtM.   He seems to be wearing some kind of band uniform....he has epaulettes on his shoulders, a big smile, and a curl in the middle of his forehead.

Either my sister or I had one, but it was dressed in red, but had the smile and the curl.

It's only on Direct TV because FX dropped it. Direct TV decided to pick it up. You have to have Direct TV, which is not a cable station, but a pay-TV provider, to watch the show.

This is as bad as when Time Warner had divided Manhattan into two sections and both halves had different programming outside of the four main networks!

Luckily, I don't care about DAMAGES but I find the concept of needing a different form of reception to watch a program rather ridiculous.

Yes cable companies and satellite providers are having some volatile disagreements about programming....which of course all comes down to $$$$$

I opened up advance orders to the castrec-l group, as I always do - and for advance orders we've broken all records - about 100 sold before we even announce.

Ask BK:

I am most curious as to what brought on your new found interest in Scandanavian TV shows.

It is rather fun to discover a new favorite, isn't it! And something you probably would never have imagined even caring about.

ChasSmith, your list wasn't too long. Enjoyed the responses. I forgot one from mine yesterday. When I first got "Flahooley," I must have played that recording night and day for three weeks.

On the original HELLO, DOLLY! LP from RCA  Victor, there is someone shouting something during "Put On Your Sunday Clothes"....shouting someone's name.....it sounds like they holler "Jack".....and for years when I listened with my headphones, I thought someone was yelling my name and I would take off the headphones and yell back..."WHAT???"

During the Entr'acte of AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', the band pipes in with "Ain't nobody's business if she does!"  Their voices are so clear and vibrant that I sometimes jump and think someone has suddenly entered the room.

TOD: What is the worst sound you've heard on an original cast recording, BK?

I have heard plenty of OBCs that I consider aurally dead, so flat that they bore the ear. Seussical was one. The recording is inert, yet I was pleasantly surprised by how vibrant and wonderful the music was when I heard it in the theater.

Bat Boy is terrible-sounding, completely dead.  And, I hate to say it, the new recording of Follies, which people are drooling over on the various boards, is not to my liking at all - recorded in a dead room, no reverb (that I can hear) added - that's how to take and orchestra of twenty-eight and make them sound like nineteen.  The vocals are dead, the dialogue is dead - when I was listening to our remixes, I'd occasionally A/B them with the first Follies release and then the new recording - it was - illuminating.

That's another thing that can kill an OCR for me--inclusion of segments of dialogue.  I son't mind a lead-in or a brief exchange.  But recordings like ANNIE 2, VICTOR/VICTORIA,  and the latest A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC and FOLLIES are filled with it.  It disrupts the listening experience for me.

I know what you mean.  That Broadway Cast Album of WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? didn't leave ANY room for the songs.

We must have all the details as they become known.  Don't worry about accuracy....just tell us what you know.  It is theatre, after all.
