I wonder if Social Security sells lists of e-mail addresses of people on Disability.  I must get four or five e-mails a day offering to sell me life insurance.  Somebody thinks I am going to croak.

Very strangely, ever since I contacted someone's at GMHC legal [with a question about someone in their office, not about a medical issue, so nothing like that] for the first time, that specific email address has been steadily getting sex-related spam about escorts (like "local sluts near you") where it literally absolutely never had before, and I'd had the email address for over ten years.

Local paper reports she is leaving New York and is moving back to Birmingham MI where she grew up. She had bought a condo in downtown Birminhham (a ritzy suburb of Detroit). Her family is still in the area.

Boy, am I having a laid-back day.  (Read:  getting nothing done.)

Yesterday started off, appropriately, as a Friday but at some point when I wasn't looking it turned into a Saturday, because that's what it felt like from mid-afternoon till I gave up the ghost late last night.  Today, naturally, feels like a Sunday.

Watched TALES THAT WITNESS MADNESS and I have to admit to a some disappointment in the overall quality of the tales.  It's still enjoyable; it has a fine cast and the creators who knew this stuff; but I guess the format was running out of steam in 1973, as it's clearly not up to the level of ASYLUM (which the framing plot blatantly copies), THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, etc.  Nevertheless, I'm happy to finally have it on the shelf with those others.

My ideal decade is not a calendar one, but a span like 1958-1967.  Or maybe 1957-1966.  In other words, the late 50s / early 60s.  And like TCB, as long as we're making demands of the haineshisway.com time machine, I insist upon being there as my current self, but at an age more like late twenties.  (I was going to say 20s-30s-ish, but why not go for broke.)

Yes, we always look back through our rose-colored glasses, but I nevertheless subscribe to the notion that civilization in general, and the arts and entertainment worlds specifically, were at a peak during the core of those years that I would like to relive with full awareness and appreciation.

But I'll tell you what.  If the haineshisway time machine cannot grant me that, then I will very happily settle for the 1970s.  See what a generous and flexible person I am?

Back from lunch at Mo's - had a chinese chicken salad.  No packages, so I'm home now, relaxing and listening to the new soundtrack release of Body Heat.  What a great score, and nice to finally have it complete.

Speaking of dancers.  Last night I was watching a PBS concert of the Vienna Philharmonic.  At one point they perfromed La mar by Debussy.  During the second movement they had some young females dancing, and in the third movement they added two shirtless males as the wind who were dancing with the waves (young females).  At one point during the dance one of the men did a lift of the other male dancer.  It occurred to me, that I don't remember ever seeing a male dancer do a lift of another male dancer.  I have not attended a lot of ballet, but I was still surpised to see it.

Downtown Birmingham, MI, is charming.  We used to go there to shop at Jacobson's, a now-defunct upscale department store.  We also shopped at their stores in Dearborn, near where I grew up, and in Ann Arbor, where I went to college.  That Ann Arbor store became Border's when Jake's closed and you know what happened next...

My 1950's trip in the time machine actually stretched up to November of 1963.  I have always thought of the Kennedy assasination as the end of innocence.

Today being the opening day of college football, it is also the opennng game for the University of Washington Huskies team.  Unfortunately, the Pac 12 teams have a new cable network for all of their games, ironically called the Pac 12 Network.  This new network has not gotten around to making a deal with Direct TV, so I can't watch tonight's first game.

Last night, I saw an amazing production of Ragtime.  When I first saw the production, I was not impressed.  Too much going on, and it was very difficult to watch.  I saw it locally 7 years ago, which was a bit better, but not much because it wasn't cast well.  Well, last night, I saw this show in a rather small space (199 seats) with a cast of 55 and a band of 14.  Finally, I'm able to enjoy the story without the hindrance of an overly designed set or not-so-great leads.  Maybe one of the best things I've seen locally in a long time. 

RAGTIME is a favorite of mine.  I saw it at the Shubert in Los Angeles before it went to Broadway, and loved it.

In fact, the ZACH is doing it here in Austin next month, but I'm  (unfortunately) going to miss it because I'm going to be in Los Angeles that week.

Hopefully, one of these days, they'll turn it into a movie.

Downtown Birmingham, MI, is charming.  We used to go there to shop at Jacobson's, a now-defunct upscale department store.  We also shopped at their stores in Dearborn, near where I grew up, and in Ann Arbor, where I went to college.  That Ann Arbor store became Border's when Jake's closed and you know what happened next...

We lived about 10 minutes from downtown Birmingham.  My first adventure out of our neighborhood, once the kids were settled in school, was to Birmingham.  Moves are always difficult & I was simply thrilled to find such a charming town so close to us. 

I remember Jacobson's well.  It was the first time I saw a department store with different departments in completely different buildings.

Today is grand dog Yogi's birthday.  I remember the day in Bucharest Craig found him on his doorstep.  Yogi was so young it is probably why he suffer's from separation anxiety.

I like Ragtime too. Strangely enough - or maybe not so strangely - the one moment that gets to me every time is "Our Children". When I went to the closing performance of the recent revival, my eyes started to well up with tears as soon as the intro started. By the end of the first verse, I was a blubbering fool. Just such a beautiful and simple and hopeful(!) moment and song. -Damn, I'm starting to cry now just thinking of it.
