DR ELMORE try Maxthon 3 or Comodo Dragon....two nice browsers.....Comodo can port all of your FireFox favorites and bookmars.

Maxthon probably can, but I have looked around much on it.

Wasn't it a comodo dragon that bit Sharon Stone a couple of years ago?

We went up to the senior center for tonight's special Christmas dinner - ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, baked apples, cranberry relish, rolls, and dessert - all for $8/person.  Dessert was 2 apple dumplings - each - so we came home with 3 of them in a box.  When we left there we took a drive to see Christmas lights and now I'm going downstairs to spend some time at the package-wrapping table.

Surgery vibes for DR Cillaliz's sister-in-law!  I'm glad the relatives didn't risk the driving.

In a bit I am going to do my last shopping for Christmas.  My sister Molly and her husband finally got to move into the house that my brother Dane owns....but of course there are NO appliances.....the former tenants took everything.....even though everything was there when they moved in.  Said tenant told my brother that they bought ALL NEW appliances in the five years that they lived there, and so they took them.

Said tenants have disappeared......owing a $350 sewer bill and electric and gas bills as well.....  My brother had to pay the sewer assessment, but the utility companies will have to find the tenants.  Good luck.

SO ANYWAY......my sister and I are going shopping today to get stove/refrigerator/washer and dryer for Molly.....  This will use up the rest of my savings from 2012....but that's all right....it's the end of the year anyway....and I wasn't saving it for anything in particular anyway.

Um if they bought all new appliances then what did they do with the old ones?  That is ridiculous. Your brother should go after them too....

Exactly!  There were appliances in the apartment when the people arrived...there should appliances when they leave! >:(

Since the tenants disappeared I'm guessing not much can be done to retrieve the lost appliances or money.  :(

But how could they really disappear? They left. But I"m sure his brother has their social insurance numbers or something.

No, it wasn't Stone...it was her then-husband  Phil Bronstein (hotshot editor with San Francisco Chronicle).  They divorced in 2004...he got custody of their adopted child.

Thanks everyone.  I'm excited and very glad that I'll know on Friday.  Edith is nervous but excited too.  She has been looking at opportunities should I get the job and has already found several that look good to her.  She told me that she's learned something from everyone she's worked for and what she learned from me was not to be afraid to take a chance like I did when I left a really good job when  I wasn't happy because things can turn out very well. She said she could sit at home and be miserable about it or she can look at it as an opportunity to do even better.

Christmas in South Carolina, Part 4:

All quiet on the eastern front today.   My aunt picked us up at 9 a.m. and we went to Aiken SC to shop til we dropped.   At this point in their lives, my mom and aunt drop sooner than I do, but I wasn't really shopping, per se, so I just walked through the stores and looked and looked.  We went to Home Depot, WalMart (where I stumbled across, and bought, "Diamonds Are Forever" on Blu-ray disc -- a WalMart exclusive), Walgreens, Prestige Appliances and Belk.  Then we went to Red Lobster for lunch (and I have to voice major disappointment at the puny shrimp served in their luncheon special.  A dozen shrimp, each about the size of a cocktail shrimp, and most of it breading.  I know better now, of course).

After that, we made one more stop at Leverett's Shoes and then we came home.  I took a nap, after which my aunt came over and we played three hands of SkipBo.  Yesterday afternoon, I won 4 hands and my mom won two.  Today, we all won a hand.  More SkipBo tomorrow afternoon with a four person joining the fun.

Tonight, I'm going to watch NCIS.  It may be my Cousin Debra and her daughter, Becky (newly engaged), will stop by as they're going to be at my aunt's after supper.

Happy Vibes to all who need them this holiday season.   Keep your mistletoe fresh and your breaths redolent of peppermint!

I can't find my hardcopy of Les Miserables.  I'm looking to compare it to my eBook which just doesn't seem right.
In order:
Preface
Fantine (title)
Book First-A Just Man (title)
Chapter 1-M. Myriel

It has been a LONG time since I've read this, but doesn't the book begin with Jean Valjean and not with the Bishop?

I'm sure that every different version is translated differently and edited differently.  You never know what you can end up with.

Have you read it?  I swear I've never seen this version.
Many of them are abridged. The novel I read that was supposedly unabridged was more than 1,000 pages.

I think the Chronicle got rid of him, too, if I remember correctly.

I'm sure that every different version is translated differently and edited differently.  You never know what you can end up with.

Most editions of LES MIS, like most 19th century European novels,  are either in stilted 19th century English and censored or heavily abridged. Because they are public domain, they get reprinted regularly since a lot of publishers are doing "budget" classics. The only decent complete and unabridged translation is the one  from New American Library/Signet, new translation by Lee Fahnestock and Norman MacAfee. The new Random House translation has been criticized for the translator's poor attempt to catch a contemporary vernacular and to distort the text deliberately.

Thank you.

If this is the version you recommend, http://books.google.com/books?id=pPF0GH_8BgYC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false, it also begins with the Bishop & at a quick glance seems to be similar in the translation.  Maybe my memory is just off.  I can't get this one in eBook :(

The eBook version I have was translated by Isabel F. Hapgood & published by Thomas Y Crowell & Sons.  It is over 1200 pages, about the length of the first version I read, and what I believed to be an unabridged edition.  In high school, just about half a year after I read Les Miz our class read the, very much, abridged addition that stated it was abridged.  I find it interesting there is nothing in the book I'm reading that states it is at all abridged.

I wonder if that's what I actually have.  I know it had that cover taken from the original London production.

LOL, I hope they didn't call the entire town.  We think we were accidentally added to the calling list, either my the wrong number punched in or off the "emergency" number Craig gave last year when he worked in the elementary school here.  I should be able to reach someone tomorrow to correct this.  It's just a shame it happened on a morning when I needed sleep to feel better.

I'm sure with the glowing recommendation you would give Edith she would get any job she applied to.
