A septic system vent pipe that runs through the unfinished attic had a little water in it (normal), which froze at a point right above my desk in my second story bedroom. Right over the laptop. I came in from snow clearing to find a drip of water entering the keyboard right next to the power button.

And why, you ask (I certainly asked it), after nearly 19 years, did this pipe suddenly freeze up? Because a squirrel or something had entered the attic at some point (not uncommon) and had pushed some insulation around in so doing, exposing that section of the pipe to a direct blast of cold air. The water froze and cracked the pipe, sending a steady trickle through the fittings around a forced-air heating duct over the desk.

I'm told there's still a chance that the last bit of water in the machine will eventually evaporate and it could start again. But it's been eight days now, and I suspect the water shorted something or caused some other damage. A friend assures me the data on the hard drive is safe and can be recovered. And he knows how to do it.

Anyway, that's my little overdue story for the day. Have to return this laptop now, so more later.

When a cell phone (much smaller, I know) gets wet, it can be put in some dry, uncooked rice for a few days. I wonder if this would/could work for a laptop.

Well, mostly the news is good - what we thought were termites are carpenter ants. He's isolated the two areas where they are coming in, which naturally are the two windows in the living room that have the large dry rot problem that I've been telling these people about for two years now. He did find some minor termite evidence elsewhere, so he'll probably treat that with the orange spray. So to begin, he'll treat the two windows and that will take care of the carpenter ants. He also suggested we cut back some trees that are too close to the house - that apparently makes it worse. Then he'll give me a price for the termite stuff and that I'll run by the business manager - I'm not running the carpenter ants by anyone and I'll just deduct from this month's rent.

Oh, someone on my floor has been doing some major cooking lately, and I just want to find out who it is and invite myself over...it always smells soooooooo yummy! I think it might the University student from Saudi Arabia who moved in down the hall last month. She is studying for her Masters.

I forgot to mention how easy it was for me to go through security at the airports on our trip to and from Cozumel. Now that I don't have to hand carry the injectable medication I'm not automatically subjected to a body search.

Medford and San Francisco have new machines. You go through them like the naked machines only it just shows an outline of your body and anything questionable. My artificial body part doesn't raise red flags.

Cancun had the traditional machine but I didn't set off alarms when I went through it, not even the zippers on my cargo pants that had to be checked in San Francisco & Medford. Keith was shocked to see me so quickly. He didn't even have time to pick up our stuff after it went through the x-ray machine.
