Re: Miss America's 52 contestants, I know the District Of Columbia is one.
I guess the other one is either Miss Iraq or Miss Australia - from two of the newer states.

I vote for there being a Miss Shire and a Miss Rivendell, a Miss Rohan and a Miss Gondor.

But don't let in Miss Mordor.

oops -- spoo!

Forgot to answer Michael Shayne's remark re: Tony Roberts ' comment about Blake Edwards!

I believe he meant that the Broadway people he got to work with didn't like his "Hollywood attitude" and that also reflected on the Tony voters' decision, but I can only rely on what the article excerpt says!

It might have been a Hollywood VERSUS Broadway thing! :(

RE:Talent Competition.  Sad, but don't try to email the MAO (that's the Miss America Organization to us civilians) they have NO sense of humor about their organization...and it is NOT a beauty pageant, it is the largest women's scholarship organization in the WORLD!!!  If not for MAO there would be NO educated women in the United States of America!
And the leader of this organization is referred to as Chairman MAO?

Stimulating posts required DRs or I shall return to bed.
Those in pain (Elmore and Ron) are exempt from such stimulation of course. (Unless it helps).

Last Cd played last night was a Beatles compilation - I was recording the songs "Girl" and "If I Fell".
I made a Bee Gees compilation for a friend the other day - some wonderful melodies but NEVER read those lyrics. I guess songs don't  need to make sense to be successful. I would prefer to leave my cake out in the rain.  Taste is such a personal issue.

The daugher of der Brucer and her family are scheduled to visit tomorrow.

They aren't bothering to tell us when they will arrive.

The good news is that I have to work tomorrow, so maybe I'll miss them entirely.  Or not at all, depending on how you want to interpret this.

Old news I guess but there is yet another "pop song" show around "Colour My World" - songs from the group "Chicago".. I thought it would have been Jackie Trent & Tony Hatch songs as the reference was Colour rather than color! (Broadway News or whatever  it is called).

my parents came home from the Jean-Talon market (think gynormous outdoors farmer's market with a mediterranean mix)  today with a crate (!) of my absolute favourite summer time treat:

FRESH FIGS!!!

In the spate of two hours, I have eaten six and am seriously considering downing a couple more.

Media Check:

VCR: nothing
DVD: Calendar Girls
CD: I popped in my Zanna Don't! cast recording today
MP3: I'm very much loving Maximum Broadway Radio on Live365.  They've even stopped playing "She Loves Me!" every three seconds :)

CD - Lionel Bart's LA STRADA, Rodgers & Hart's EVER GREEN (2 words indicates the British stage version as opposed to the one word movie), 2 Merman LPs from the 60s newly released on one CD

DVD - Probably the original CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN/BELLES ON THEIR TOES

WHS - Nothing

Are you actuallly listening to Bart's score that he wrote or the one that appeared on Broadway with only about 4 of his songs and the rest written by the uncredited Martin Charnin and the musical director whose name escapes me at the moment I write this.

Dangerous Area Emily.  Once again there will be lurkers out there trying to discover more about this wonderful Fig site. Of course some of us would not be considered that fresh.

Okay I looked up La Strada. According to my notes: Only four songs written by Lionel Bart made it to the opening and closing night performance. !3 other songs by Bart were dropped along the way. 10 songs written by Martin Charnin and musical director Elliot Lawrence made it to the opening. Although they did write 7 others songs that did not.

A good deal of score was reused for The Optimists aka The Optimists of Nine Elms. has anyone seen this film from 1973 that starred Peter Sellers

Since Noel mention Frank Wildhorn and his Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde and I just mentioned Lionel Bart. Does anyone remember the musical version that Lionel Bart wrote for TV that starred Kirk Douglas? When he was Mr. Hyde his famous cleft chin was filled in. It was Directed by David Winters who also directed BK in the classic film Racquet.

I'm more concerned about the quantity of figs she has consumed and threatens to consume.  "Euphemstically" speaking, she shouldn't make any road trips for a while.

...and this weekends Bollywood movie is:

LAKEER.

I don't quite know what the plot is about but I bought the soundtrack several months ago and it has become one of my all time favorite CDs. So even if the movie is no good I know it will have some great music and it will be fun to see how they have "picturized" the songs.

Also it has two of the hottest Bollywood actors around starring in it, Sunil Shetty and John Abraham!

CD: BABES IN TOYLAND

TIVO: the usual, SG1, Atlantis and MONK

DR Michael Shayne. I saw "The Optimists" years ago. It is a delightful film.. I still have the Soundtrack. BK used to have it I think. I did post a pic of the cover at some stage.

my annual fig binges have never caused me any duress...

although they probably SHOULD given that the average sized fig packs quite the wallop of containing just under 20% of a person's daily recommended intake of fibre :)

And this is from a Canadian!!!!

How many contestants in Miss Canada? I don't think I ever watched one when I lived there.

Well I have watched Miss America before and seen Miss District of Columbia.

There is no more Miss Canada pageant.  Or at least nothing we can watch.  I'm not sure how our rep is chosen.

I really am not sure how many contestants there were when it existed. I find it hard to picture a pageant with only 10 women.

Broadway's Lost Treasures II
Throughout the years, the Tony Awards® have not only recognized the best of Broadway but also, with their annual telecast, created an amazing archive of star performers in their Broadway prime. Now, BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II presents more of the showstopping performances culled from decades of Tony Awards® ceremonies. Among the leading men and ladies performing classic numbers from legendary Broadway shows are Angela Lansbury in "Everything's Comin' Up Roses" from "Gypsy"; Julie Andrews in a medley of songs from "Camelot" and "My Fair Lady"; Jerry Orbach as the original Billy Flynn in "All I Care About Is Love" from "Chicago"; Gregory Hines and the cast of "Jelly's Last Jam" in a sizzling show medley; Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman's duet "Music of the Night" from "The Phantom of the Opera"; Brent Barrett and Michael Jeter in "Take a Glass Together" from "Grand Hotel"; Debbie Allen leading a rousing rendition of "America" from "West Side Story"; and other hits from shows like "Sweet Charity," "La Cage aux Folles," "Follies," "Ain't Misbehavin'," and many more.

Watch for the launch of the Web companion on Monday, August 2, 2004. www.pbs.org
