I loved "A Place in the Sun," but I was not as big a fan of "An American Tragedy," which we had to read in 11th grade. I think it was the only book assigned to us in high school that I did not finish. I even finished "Intruder in the Dust," which turned me off Faulkner for 20 years. I only read the first 600 or so pages of "Tragedy" and should have read the last 200 after making that much effort, but I completely lost interest.

Which brings to my Ask BK question: Were there any assigned books you didn't finish in high school? Or at least ones that stick out?

Wednesday morning greetings!  It's a packin' and postin' day for me, because tomorrow we're off to Illinois for some family time wrapped around a long weekend in Chicago for the American Library Association Annual Conference.  My conference calendar has filled out nicely and I'm looking forward to reconnecting with a lot of professional friends.

Thrilled over the DOMA decision. And same-sex couples in California will again be able to marry.

A great day, indeed!

More great notes.

A PLACE IN THE SUN is a terrific movie....I like everyone....and it is very entertaining to see Raymond Burr in Lawyer Mode years before he became Perry Mason.

Very excited to have this music!!

I had a friend in college who wanted to write a musical based on A PLACE IN THE SUN (he hadn't read the novel) called "In A Rowboat With You."

Greetings from Toyland! Everything is packed, sealed and ready to go.

I'm glad he changed his mind.

The "You" referring to Tallulah Bankhead, of course.    :)

Good morning.  Beginning my day with an album of Polish Wedding music by the Kryger Brothers.  Very fitting for this morning in California!

Casa on Cienega is the title of my new Off-Broadway musical.  I think only Jason Robert Brown could do the subject justice....and even he....just barely.  :P

In keeping with the nostalgic theme of the past few days -

bk, have you seen this site?   http://www.whatwasthere.com/browse.aspx#!/ll/34.0522342,-118.2436849/zoom/12/

What a cool site DR JingJang!

I was able to see what our Rite-Aid looked like when it was a Pay-Less back in the 1950s. Let me tell you, it looked much nicer as a Pay-Less! I should show this snap shot to the store manager and tell them to put a little color back into this building!

Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of boiled blood, namely mine, and now it is time for you to post until the boiled cows come home.

I must confess that from 10am until about 11am I did nothing but read the SCOTUS Blog and Twitter and updates on the NY Times

Or something...she'll have to take the plunge toward de-suctioning the suction so she can take it with her.

That same idiot critic also denigrated A Place in the Sun while praising the previous film version.  Why?  Because it's directed by Josef Von Sternberg - an AUTEUR who can do no wrong.  Now, I am a huge fan of Mr. Von Sternberg, but An American Tragedy is not a good film no matter who directed it.
