Blu-ray: DRACULA (1958) - rental
I saw DRACULA decades ago on TV but frankly I’ve never thought much of the Hammer horror films. I thought I’d rent this to see if my opinion has changed but I’m afraid it hasn’t. I find it unimaginatively filmed, with static camera set ups; lacking style, atmosphere or suspense. Good examples of well made gothic horror films are the Edgar Allan Poe adaptations directed by Roger Corman, made about the same time as the Hammer horror films, which are vastly superior in every way. I’ve also thought Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee vastly overrated in their acting ability – would they have become stars if they’d never been taken up by Hammer? As for James Bernard’s, “let’s have a crescendo every three seconds” score, the less said the better….
