Several friends of my parents also came over. Two of them, Margita (who lives in Spokane and one of her sons and grand kids live in Olympia), and Judy (who lives in Tacoma) have known my parents since we all lived in Germany in the same apartment building when my dad (and their former husbands) were in the army in the late 1960s. And Mona (who lives just a few blocks from my parents) and John and Anna (who just live a few miles away) have known my parents since we lived in Colorado, in the early 1970s. They've all gotten to know each other over the years. A very good time was had by all.

This is what I miss about living in LA, loads of friends and family to spend time with.

Sue (the English name she goes by) is actually Chinese, not Japanese and she's not taking classes, she's actually teaching beginning Chinese to students here in the US. Anyway, she's very nice and she does speak and understand English very well.

I chuckled over all the changes in the story It still is interesting and I expect should be a very enjoyable experience.

Been synching my phone and computer music files. I hate iTunes. I hate the fact that you can't get some albums in order. The whole score of "Giant," for example, is grouped by the person singing it, so all of Brick's solos are together, etc. And Orchestra, which plays the overture, is toward the end. Blech.

IMHO, the 2nd & 3rd books were much better than the films.

I watched a wonderful British film last night, THE SCAPEGOAT. It's a remake of a 1959 Bette Davis film, based on a story by Daphne de Maurier. A man walks into a pub and happens upon his doppelganger. I would never have guessed how it plays out. Beautifully done, with lots of nuances.

DR Doug, have you seen this? I believe it was made for TV. Do you know? Anyone else seen it?

And I am home! 45 minutes of bus hell with a mother who did jack to discipline her two misbehaving brats, and i really longed for the little on who thought she was cute when she emitted piercing high pitched screams to inhale something and choke to death in front of my eyes. When my brothers and I were kids, we were disciplined, especially when we were obnoxious in public. This mother couldn't put down her cell phone to do a thing.These kids are riding free and I wish they were under the bus rather than riding inside it.

I have to wash and clean up some broccoli for dinner

JRand, I'm also put off at times by movie or book titles, but THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO surprised me. I agree with BK that it's a wonderful film. The writing was better than I expected, far above most writing these days. I'd urge you to give it a few minutes at least. It is violent, but no worse than many others.

I am amazed at how many parents allow their children to run wild--and at how few recipients say anything. I think a bus driver would be justified in telling the woman to quiet her children or get off the bus. Not likely, I know, but I'd like to see it.

Wouldn't that be a novelty, the bus driver saying something. I wonder if they just learn to tune out all the noise behind them.

The violence in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is nothing compared to really violent films - nothing you haven't seen before and nothing terrible.

Also, Jrand, while the film and English translation of the first book is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the Swedish title actually translates to Men Who Hate Women, which is what the book is kind of about.
