WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO WE LIVE IN?
« on: August 15, 2013, 12:16:29 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes asked important questions such as what kind of world do we live in, and now it is time for you to post until the worldly cows come home.

The program portion of the Bergman evening sounds like it was great fun.

I wonder if the security measures were dictated by the Academy, or by the Bergmans?

Good morning, all!

This morning, we have the entire cast; we've rehearsed everyone in bits and pieces, and today we put the whole thing together. I don't know if we will do the whole show twice today or work sections, but by the end of the day's rehearsal, everyone will know how they fit into the scenario. The cast has a day off tomorrow while I go to the first orchestra rehearsal, so I hope they do not party too much. It's very much a group that likes to party.

DR JRand62, continued good wishes for a successful run of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE!

DR cillaliz, you must have one of those Crazy Cat Lady's!

I am off to rehearsal.

DR ryacko said:

Well, I'm all in a DITHER after seeing that you watched BODY DOUBLE last night, BK. I am actually in the film for about 3 seconds, if I recall. I was a day player/glorified extra in the elevator at the Beverly Connection, when the  door opens and we all see the Indian growling at the Wasson and Co. I thought the film was so bad, I only ever watched it once, even though I appeared in it.

We need HHW bumper stickers and refrigerator magnets that say:      I SAW DR RYACKO IN BODY DOUBLE

Alan Ladd:
This Gun for Hire

The Bergmans:
I Wish You a Waltz (most of the Ballroom score, actually, but this song in particular)

TOD:

I have never been a fan of Alan Ladd.  I think he was a dull actor.

Yes, there are films of his that I do like, but not because he is in them.  Indeed, I think the films would have been much better with a different actor in his role.

With regard to THE GLASS KEY, I much prefer the original with George Raft.

True, Raft was no actor, but he did have a strong "tough guy" screen presence that, in my opinion, Ladd lacked.

Frankly, if it wasn't for SHANE, I think that Ladd would be totally forgotten today.

On the other hand, Raft is more remembered, not necessarily for any particular role, but as one of the major icons (along with Cagney, Robinson and Bogart) of the gangster film.

No gossip DR FJL....it's pretty much people doing their jobs!  LOL....

DR TCB....the man with the moustache is my cousin Brad who is playing Robert Martin/Percy Hyman.  He looks about the same with or without makeup.  He is an elementary school behavior specialist at Cloverdale....where he was born and has lived all of this life.

I like Alan Ladd....but not many of his dreary movies.  There are exceptions....already named:

The Blue Dahlia
Shane
and The Carpetbaggers
I also kind of like Boy on a Dolphin

The Bergmans wrote so many songs I like....but I will post one that probably is not so well known:

I Believed It All music by Al Hamm from the Carol Lynley version of Harlow....and it also appeared musically for some reason in the film version of Stop the World.....

TOD:

I don't know that Ladd was a wonderful actor, but he was very good when his blandness was effectively used for enigma and mystery.

SHANE (a brilliantly meticulous western)
THE BLUE DAHLIA
THE GLASS KEY
THIS GUN FOR HIRE
WHISPERING SMITH (who could forget Frank Faylen as Whitey Dusang)
CITIZEN KANE (not because of Ladd's uncredited bit as a nameless reporter)

...and it's either DUFFY'S TAVERN or VARIETY GIRL where Ladd has a great bit in a skit, where a guy (Howard DeSilva?) slaps a girl around (Veronica Lake?) and tells her to come home.  Ladd, all trenchcoat toughness, says with quiet menace to the brute, "Let me see you do that again."  So the guy slaps the girl again, whereupon Ladd says: "You better go home with him, Lady, he seems pretty tough."   Haven't seen this in years.

I once went to an open house in Los Feliz that had been Ladd's home.  The bar in the rec room was carved with the names of various celebrities who had visited the place.  Very cool.

San Antonio's Fiesta grocery stores is making the rounds on the Internet for this unintentionally hilarious sign. It's a good diet aid, if you ask me:

True DR FJL...true.

Just read that Ham adapted, scored, and conducted the music for the movie version of  STOP THE WORLD....   So THAT'S how that song ended up in there.....
