Before I could toddle I was a Mickey Mouse fan through seeing the early black and white cartoon GULLIVER MICKEY which was one of the films my father owned which he would regularly show on his projector. The first cartoon I saw theatrically was Disney's ALICE IN WONDERLAND on first release in 1951 but I was only 6 and have only a hazy memory of seeing it (obviously I've seen the film again since then). My favorite characters were Disney's Mickey, Donald, Pluto and Goofy - yes, I have all those Disney Treasures DVD sets! I also loved Popeye and would rush home from school in order to be in time to watch his shows on TV (no school run in those days!).

I'm up after eight hours of sleep.  I think I can be jogging by ten to get that out of the way before the temperature reaches what I'm told will be 100 degrees.

The mention of ALICE IN WONDERLAND recalls to me a lady I sat next to at one of Ray Courts' autograph shows.  Her name was Virginia Davis, and she was the original "Alice".

Apparently before he created Mickey Mouse (or perhaps it was at the same time), Walt Disney did a series of live action/cartoon shorts about a little girl (Alice), who appeared with cartoon characters.

I've never seen one of them.  Has anybody here?

I've never seen the old Alice you mention, Druxy. But it reminded me of the time I interviewed Sheldon Harnick. We were talking about the Shoestring Revues and the great "Medea in Disneyland" sketch in particular. In it, Harnick imagined what Medea would be like if Disney had done her story. Bea Arthur played Medea's fairy godmother who quotes from the volume "Particles of Articles from Historical Oracles." Anyway, that sketch was inspired by the 1950s version of Alice, which he was not too fond of.

DR Robin, I was also a huge fan of THE WACKY RACES. I picked up the DVD set when Big Lots had it for $3. I knew it wasn't something that was likely to be as amusing now that I am an adult, but I enjoyed for the nostolgia. I picked up sets for my grand neice and nephew and they loved it.

Of course Penelope Pitstop was my favorite of the races, and I had her die cast car when I was a kid.

I have no memorye of my first cartoons, but I do have early memories of the HASHIMOTO series of cartoons, a Japanese mouse from Terrytoons. Very likely it got me started on my early childhood interest in all things Japanese.

DR Druxy, I have seen some of the old silent Alice in Wonderland shorts that Virginia Davis was in. They were amusing, as I recall. I met her at the Ray Courts Show also, as we were checking in at the front desk at the same time. She was  very sweet. We chatted later about doing an interview in the future, but she was at that time taking care of her very ill husband. Sadly she died a few years later.

In the 1940s, she appeared in many films in uncredited chorus girl/dancer roles. She was very pretty!

Here she is in 1924 as Alice

Here she is in the 1940s

And here she is around the time she was at the Ray Courts Celebrity and Memorabilia show in the 2000's

Those two sci-fi deeveedee sets look awfully tempting, if I do say so myself.  And I do say so myself.

Those two sets do look fine.  Thank you, DR MBarnum.

Okay, break's over.  Back to work.

Seven of the Alice shorts are included in the "Walt Disney Treasures: Disney Rarities" DVD. Frankly I found them a complete bore! The DVD includes an interview Leonard Maltin did with Virginia Davis.

The Time Travelers is really worth getting. I haven't seen it for many years but remember it as an original and surprisingly bleak film.

I loved the "Alice" shorts myself.  I found them both primitive and charming, simultaneously.

That's how I feel about early animation in general.  When I watch a Felix the Cat or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit 'toon, it's like watching a new art form develop right in front of my eyes.

And since no one else said it, I'm going to...Disney had better animation, but Warner Bros. had the jokes.  And that makes Warnertoons stand the test of time, whereas Disneytoons are quaint relics.  Both are great, but Bugs wins over Mickey any day.

Okay, I'd better check those contents, too.  I know I have The Brain That Wouldn't Die.  Will do that tonight.  Got to run now and go watch a movie at a friend's house, the one with the good projection system.  Later!

DR Mike's video clip from Baby reminded me of something I'd blocked out. The staging conceit for the original production: curtains.

Not your ordinary run-of-the-mill curtains, mind you. Dancing curtains. Oh yes: these long, ugly, gauzy curtains that were automated on overhead tracks. These curtains did curly-cues and do-si-dos and somersaults and handstands. And they barely ever stopped moving. And they were NOISY. I mean, I get it - the book for the musical had a lot of scenes in rapidly changing interiors, and the curtains were a way to define the spaces. But they practically drowned out the show.

Oh, and did I mention that they were ugly?    :)

There are also a couple of Spaghetti Western 4 movie sets for the same price.

No. Alison Weir's The Lady In The Tower. I've read nearly all of her books on the clan of Henry VIII.
