I'm feeling somewhat revived after eating dinner, so here is a short version of what happened.
Ten hikers and one husband, Allen, with an injured leg, drove out to see the fall colors. Allen had a book to read and was going to wait to have lunch with us where we parked, at Beckie's Cafe.
Ten of us headed out including a husband & wife who stopped to take photos and said they would meet us where the road crossed the path. We didn't see them again until we finally made it back to Beckie's. On a side note they apparently got separated from each other with the wife returning to the Cafe at 1:00 and the husband at 2:00.

That left eight of hike to do the full hike. It was my idea to cross the river on one bridge and back on a 2nd bridge which we never found. Once it became obvious we missed the bridge for the almost life of me I have no idea why we didn't backtrack. At the point we waded across a wide creek to reach the river we really should have turned back. The problem was the voices to forge ahead were louder than those who wanted to backtrack.
Once again on a trail along side the river we were still on the wrong side of it and went left looking for a bridge instead of turning right, back towards where we came from.

Eventually I stated so all could here me, and not just the few, that there wasn't a bridge in the direction we were heading. Someone said there must be so we continued on.
