TOD:

Film: UNINVITED; NIGHT (or CURSE) OF THE DEMON. I was hired by Universal to write a new version of THE UNINVITED by in the 90's which I did, going back to the book as my source. It never got made...which is probably just as well as the original is pretty daman good.

Books: THE UNINVITED; Seabury Quinn's Jules DeGrandin stories about an occult detective; Manley Wade Wellman's Silver John series about a folksinger/minstrel encountering supernatural doings in the Appalachian Mts. Several Robert E. Howard stories...

What do the charge for a "cleaning"? I expect it is really just brushing the teeth, maybe a little scraping. It isn't intended to replace a proper teeth cleaning by a vet.

On Friday night, I saw a high school production of The Drowsy Chaperone. I love this show so much. Next to Once, it's probably one of the best shows in the last 10 years or so. The show was very good. The drama teacher, whom I've been friends with for almost 20 years, played the Man in Chair, and he was great. (probably because he IS the Man in Chair)

On Saturday night, I saw Carrie- the musical. It was a great production, but still a piece of crap. The scenes between Carrie and her Mom were the best things in the show, and if I'm correct in saying that these scenes were the best of the 1988 Broadway show also. The music is still ordinary (except Carrie's moms songs - which are amazing) and the effects in this production were great for a community theatre show. I'm glad I saw it, and probably never ever need to see it again - and I'd seriously think twice if ever asked to MD the show.

Sunday night at church, we did a Liturgy with all Beatles music. It was well received and a lot of fun. We'll probably make that an annual thing.

My library doesn't have it. Make sure you get the 1944 version of "The Uninvited" with Ray Milland.

I thought it was kind of cool to be driving past her house & I grew up in an area filled with celebrities.

DR Matthew, the original 1988 production was one of the most ridiculous and embarrassing shows I have ever seen. It was so inept, it was seriously like watching a really horrible car wreck and not being able to look away from the carnage. At the same time, it was so bad that it was outrageously funny. I really thought there was nothing worthwhile about the score at all.

In olden times, when I thought it was really something to find scores on eBay, I thought I was pretty hot stuff to "win" a copy of CARRIE. Which of course I knew nothing about. Except that it was "legendary".

Oy!!!

Flipping through it, I could hardly believe what I was seeing. I knew then that I'd been the greatest sucker born on that fateful day in 1949...

Mike, I hear a number of people with the same complaint about Time After Time, and I can understand not liking the lyrics. But I came to the song through Dinah Washington, and her voice covers all sins in my book. I guess I haven't heard many other recordings of it. Judy Kuhn's comes to mind.

You bet your ass, I got paid. Quite handsomely, as a matter of fact. But I was having "creative differences" with the producer at the time and I know it would not bode well. I think there may have been an attempt to take it up again, but that failed too. As John Huston always said, "Why remake our good films, why not remake our bad ones?" This one may just be too good to remake. I updated it, gave it an American Southern Gothic setting, and went back to the book, which really put the focus on the sister rather than the brother...and the intimations of lesbianism, only hinted at in the original film could also be played a little bit more freely.

I think the scariest book I have ever read is GHOST STORY (or GHOUST STORY in England) by Peter Straub. Unfortunately, the movie was good, but it didn't live up to the terror of the book. Still, having Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and John Houseman was pretty cool; with a brief bit of full frontal nudity from Craig Wasson.

THE EXCORCIST by William Peter Blatty. I made th mistake of seeing the fim before I read the book, so when I read it, all of the horror of the film carried over. My bedroom had been converted from an old porch, so the light switch was clear across the room from my bed. One night I said, "Screw it," and slept with the light on,

I saw the opera of THE INNOCENTS on PBS many years ago (under the bok title of THE TURN OF THE SCREW). It was pretty darn creepy, but nothing compared to the film with Deobrah Kerr.

I did to!!! Now you can find a pdf of it online without much work. When I think about how much I paid for that and the bootleg CD, all I think about is how young and stupid I was. (probably still might be!)

I basically watch all my dvds this way. My library gets most new releases. And it is free to borrow.

I also borrow books a lot.
