On MR SKEFFINGTON - James Agee in THE NATION:

...it takes her just short of 30 years and two and half hours of playing time to learn, from her patient husband (Claude Rains) that "a woman is beautiful only when she is loved" and to prove this point to an audience which, I fear, will be made up mainly of unloved and unlovable women.....  MR SKEFFINGTON is...an endless woman's page meditation on What To Do When Beauty Fades. The implied advice is....hang on to your husband...and count yourself blessed if like Mr Rains, in his old age, he is blinded....

Funny :)

I still liked the movie and this could have been a man as easily as a woman.  This was excessive vanity.  The acting was a joy to watch.

But the terrific performance (and he gave so many) is that of the inestimable Claude Rains.

The main reason we watched this movie.

Jed posted this on Facebook, and I thought it was pretty cool.  It is a perfect send-up of all the evil villioness's from Disney
It is called the SPELL BLOCK TANGO based on the number from CHICAGO.

DR JANE I certainly agree with what you wrote.....RE: "beautiful" people....  And DR CP is also correct in that Davis' sometimes arch manner fit the part very well....  And certainly the makeup people did a nice job, toward the end she was looking very Baby Jane Hudson-ish....

I think the psychiatrist had just seen SO MANY women like Fanny - such as the patient just before her - and her insistence that she was an "urgent case" annoyed him.

I also agree about Rains performance and that of Walter Abel - who was so much fun in HOLIDAY INN as well.

Keith made the same Baby Jane comparison.  I agree about Walter Abel.

I felt like the psychiatrists tone, not what he had to say which was fine, was in part to contrast how men behaved towards her with her beauty gone and part to contrast the too gentle husband & cousin.

Yup :)

Off to get a much needed haircut now that the handyman has gone for the day.  Keith is doing yard work.  I should have picked up acorns earlier, wish I had remembered sooner.

Wae-Ling picked up some acorns a couple of weeks ago when we went up north. She said they were "awesome!"

Had a cup of chicken soup and a ham and Swiss and no fries or onion rings.  I'm afraid jogging is going to be out at least until Thursday, when I actually have a day off.  Whilst sitting eating I heard the vile rumor that the 405 is completely shut down again - therefore all the canyon roads are jammed, including, according to the person nearby, Laurel Canyon, which is actually kind of amazing considering that it is nowhere near the 405.

Well, according to Google, the idiots who were sharing the vile rumor were incorrect - the 405 is NOT shut down today - where do these people get their stupid incorrect information?

Where are all the flying cars that were promised for The World of Tomorrow (a Brain From Planet X reference ;)), which is actually today??

Received word this morning that I've qualified to be part of THIS STUDY at Mayo Clinic.  Acceptance confirms something that I asked my cardiologist about and he kind of blew off.  Time to find a new doc!

Good luck, Ginny...with all of it!

During lunch, I made a buttermilk pecan pie. Will have to wait until tomorrow to taste it, however. I don't like delays like that.

Sitting in on a rehearsal of NOW CHANGE tonight.  Probably tomorrow night, too.  Friday is "my" rehearsal, for which I hope to holy hell the bass player and violinist I'll be playing with on "my" performance will be there.  (You never know.  Also, I think they got two violinists, so I need the right one to show up.)

I guess I'll leave in about thirty minutes.  I may try Beverly Glen to see what that's like on a weekday at four.  If it's reasonable, it's a much easier way to get to West LA than Laurel Canyon.  And if I'm going to sit in a restaurant and kill time for an hour, many more choices.
