I love Conroy's writing. I think the big problem here is I read the book after seeing the movie and too much has been left out. Too much stuff I loved.

So tonight was our Third Annual Chili contest at church - the theme this year was A Night at the Oscars and each cook's table was given a Best Picture winner as their theme. Our picture was The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Conroy's a character, and I mean that in the best way. When he came to a book convention in Sarasota, he had one prerequisite for the person doing the interview with him: The person had to have read at least one of his books. The journalist didn't have to like them, but he had to have read at least one of them.

There was only one person in the newsroom who had done that, so Charlie got the job, and he did a great interview with him for both the newspaper and for the TV station we ran. When Conroy came into the newsroom for the TV interview, he was gregarious and full of Southern charm, stopping to talk with folks. We even talked for about a minute or so, about what I can't remember.

I just realized later that he didn't want to deal with superficial questions about his work. And by that point, he was so well known that he didn't have to.

I keep tweaking my recipe- no beans and this year I added a cup of strong black coffee and a bottle of Saranac black forest beer to the mix - I prefer a sweet chili myself but I seem to be in the minority so this year I made it medium hot and kept away from the sweetness - it had a nice flavor and slow burn but not enough to blow your lips off

The Pastor's chili was a really dark sweet chili, I could taste the brown sugar and molasses in it - I really preferred his chili to mine but mine was the first pot to empty - people were coming back for seconds and thirds so I was pleased with how it came out

This year they had a red "carpet" and photographers to take our pictures

we were encouraged to dress as if we were to walk the red carpet.

I scoured the local thrift shops and finally found a dress sequined, beaded, and rhinestoned within an inch of its life

That seemed to be the general opinion. Much as the Vixter and I loved Pastor's chili we were in the minority - he had nearly half a pot of chili left at the end of the night

I am off to bed!

My head is so congested, I used the neti pot tonight to unclog my sinuses. I have to be up early to deal with all my prep work before I leave for the sessions. Since it's Sunday, God know the bus routes are more screwed up than usual. I will take the No. 104 to Lincoln Center and transfer to the No. 11 bus to 9th and 45th Street. I'd like to be there by 10:30, so I'll leave around 9:15.

Tonight I watched HOCUS POCUS, which was on my Netflix queue for Halloween, but I kept moving other films to the top of the list. It had funny moments but went on too long. Last night's film was much better.

DR vixmom, you look lovely in your sparkly blue dress. Molasses in chili? Oy!
