If anyone gives you a Barnes & Noble gift card, be sure to cash it in by the end of the year.

This may be the last year that Barnes & Noble bookstores remain open.

It’s bad news for people who love books. It’s worse news for the next generation of readers, who may never experience buying a book in a bookstore.

B&N has been closing about 20 stores per year since 2012 and has said it will continue to do so for the next several years. But its financial position is bleak.

This follows a decades-long period of expansion, moving into neighborhoods where privately-owned bookstores thrived, destroying those stores with cut-price best-sellers, and all but owning the book business.

Barnes & Noble killed privately owned bookstores, and Amazon and technology are killing B&N. It’s downright Darwinian.

Can B&N hang on through the holidays? Most likely. But sad to say, once Black Friday gives way to the 12th day of Christmas, a once-proud book chain may well have reached its final chapter.

And that would be chapter 11, of the Bankruptcy Code.

I would one of the many millions who contributed to that. I bought one of my textbooks for this semester at a brick and mortar store -- and yes, it was a Barnes & Noble.

I bought about 30 from used book websites, such as Half.com and from amazon used books.

I'm actually shocked to think about how few new books, period, I buy these days. I contribute to the problem, too, but more by being chiefly interested in older and out-of-print books, things in general that are rather harder to find, and which won't be found in any event in a Barnes and Noble store.

Can it be, though, that BK's books are just about the only NEW BOOKS I've bought over the past couple of years? Well, just about.

Here's where Barnes and Noble is valuable to me: I drop a TON of cash and plastic there at least twice a year on Blu-rays and DVDs ... led by Criterions during the sales, but I'm nearly always able to find more to add to the pile because ... it's a store, and being able to browse and discover things results in more sales.

While the chain bookstores have closed up shop, a locally owned bookstore, the two story THE BOOK BIN, which has long been in downtown Salem, recently opened a second store on the east side of town, where BORDER'S BOOKS used to be.

Oregon loves their book stores!

Re Barnes and Noble: In all fairness, I do recall that pretty much this same speculation made the rounds last year as well, with the selection of stores they closed (NYC, anyone?) being particularly threatening and depressing. But I'd sure like to hold out hope that they will persevere a bit longer...

I am leafing through the latest Verizon Wireless circular from Sunday's paper, and am astonished at the proliferation of new wireless devices for the home.

You can remotely control your thermostat, your car, your scale, your lightbulbs, and your dead bolt from your smartphone.
You can monitor the sunlight, soil, and moisture in the dirt in your garden.
You can track your sleep, pulse, and blood oxygen levels.
Not to mention creativity tools.

Technology continues to amaze!

And I am home from therapy, the post office, and the market. I will get back to the "Thousands of Flowers" orchestration shortly.

I am very worried for my friends employed by Barnes & Noble and Imagem. I wish them all well. Perhaps this will be a good thing for the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization.

I liked LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO. I saw the original production in which my friend Celia Weston had a big role. I think my friend Anastasia Barzee was also in it. I liked DRIVING MISS DAISY better, I think.

Barnes and Noble are going the way of Crown and all the others - they all robbed us of our beloved mom-and-pop stores. They did so by slashing prices so low that half of what they sold were loss leaders. But Barnes and Noble and Bookstar were something else - they became coffee houses where you could get coffee and sit and read books for free, which is exactly what everyone did. It was, I'm afraid, both predictable and inevitable. The mom-and-pops still exist online on the ABE.

I have the Blu-ray, and the two-hour doc is definitely ported from earlier releases but is excellent. Got through 38 minutes of it last week and have had to put off resuming it. Hopefully, this weekend.

In Canada our big bookstores are Chapters. I would be beyond sad if they ever closed. But they do also sell toys, magazines and have a big coffee house upstairs.
