RUN-THROUGH LAND

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a decent run-through, and now it is time for you to post until the run-through cows come home.

An early good morning to all.

We're going out for a long-ish drive through some Kentucky country today.

But first, breakfast at:    WAFFLE HOUSE.    :)

TOD:

Though I'm usually against the very idea of them, I know I've shamelessly enjoyed a few remakes.  But only for the moment.  They are quickly forgotten, which proves them to have been an utter waste of resources.  TV movie remakes are usually pretty awful.  But most theatrical ones, too.  THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, anyone?

And yes, I know that certain classic films were, themselves, remakes of earlier versions.  I think we all know the difference here.  For instance, has there (and this is an honest question) been such a remake in, say, the past 40-50 years that became a legitimate and beloved film in its own right?

For my taste, the Philip Kaufman INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS stands proudly alongside the Don Siegel original.  It is its own wonderful entity.  And of course Alfred Hitchcock was correct, and divinely inspired, to remake his own THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH.

There, I've named two (2).  I'm sure there are a few others that I'm forgetting or am unaware of.  I'm equally sure they are few and far between.

Good morning, all! I finally got eight hours of sleep for the first tie in over a week, and I'm very happy.  I'm not so happy about the schlep to Trinity Church on a cane, steps, and subway, but I have no choice. I had a fantastic time at yesterday's rehearsal, and I'm looking forward to the next three weeks of this project.

DR Singsong, I hope your surgery goes well today.

DR vixmom, I'm with you. The older I get, the more of a socialist I become. When I was in London in 1999, I needed an emergency room visit. I was in London for the JUBILEE rehearsals and broadcast performances, and I had just enough money to get hem. I was terrified of what this ER trip would cost me but I needed to see a doctor, and I saw a very pretty Scottish doctor in a hospital in Earl’s Court. I paid nothing, and my shock at this news seemed to amuse the clerk checking me out of the ER.

Having spent too many years in Manhattan struggling to keep up my health insurance premiums on my own, this was a blessing. I’ve lived nearly 68 years in this country,  fed on the propaganda that the USA is the richest, best country ever, and it’s humiliating to see how misguided so much of the propaganda now appears. We can spend trillions on needless war and let our citizens rot, half the country diets and the other half starves. There's something wrng in this picture.

BK, I deliberately avoided the remake of ROSEMARY’S BABY. I have to deal with too much stupidity unaware to want to see something I already know is stupid and/or misguided.

Tuesday morning greetings!  Tonight is our AAUW scholarship and installation dinner, a festive event to end our program year.  Madame President has a few things to do today, like writing thank-you notes to go with the appreciation gifts for 4 retiring board members, updating our display board with the state award certificates we received last month, and picking up the flowers for the installation ceremony.

Oh, and I have to remember to pick up Stella, the new member I recruited.  She's new to town and I'm afraid she'd have difficulty finding Brown's Run Country Club on her own.

I am watching a news report that a local farmer plays classical music for his cows and chickens....because they have less stress....and make better eatin'!

The cows were particularly taken with Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto in B Flat Minor.  The chickens seemed indifferent to the piece.

Last night we finished all of the dance for "Take Back Your Mink" - some of the girls are like the chickens in the news report.

I ended up with five Hot Box Girls, plus Miss Adelaide....so the patterns are sometimes a bit off.  Of course we never notice it unless all five girls are there - which Lo and Behold, last night - they were.

On castrecl, posters with the initials JC and JE would try the patience of a saint. How do these two "critics" walk and think at the same time?

And it is time to head downtown. I believe I will bus to Columbus Circle, take the No 1 subway to Rector Street and get the lay of the land. I came home yesterday via the R subway and transferred to the No 1 at Time Square: too many steps to maneuver, and i'll be coming home around rush hour.

I could see a cow liking Tchaikovsky's glorious music, but i would think chickens would prefer something like the turkey trot.

TOD:

THE MALTESE FALCON is probably the greatest of all remakes.  It was the 3rd filmed version of the novel.

John Carpenter's remake of THE THING is much better than the Howard Hawks original.

The Coen Brothers' TRUE GRIT is a better overall movie than Henry Hathaway's original, but John Wayne was a better "Rooster" than Jeff Bridges.  Wayne's portrayal had humor.

I hated the remake of 3:10 TO YUMA.  The original is a classic.

One should never remake a hit; only a flop.  Otherwise, you are competing with the memory of the first movie.

On the other hand, you can take the same basic story and put it into an entirely different setting...and it can work (e.g. HOUSE OF STRANGERS, a noirish modern drama with Edward G. Robinson, became BROKEN LANCE, an excellent Western with Spencer Tracy).

I guess I could talk remakes all day.

 ;)
