So I decided that I didn't want the lawn service to spray chemicals in my yard anymore.  I wrote an email to their website May 30 and asked to cancel, they sprayed on May 31.   I wrote again on June 9 asking them to stop...they sprayed pesticide on June 10.  I wrote another letter last night and left a message that wasn't very pleasant.  Today I called them and threatened a restraining order and told them that if one of their people come on my yard I will call the police and report them for trespassing. The man said they have cancelled me and won't be back. 

The weed killer they sprayed after I asked them to stop killed the weeds where the baby bunnies were and I think that's why the cat found them. 

Anyway, we're taking bets on whether they will be back.  They have a reputation for not stopping.

They billed me for the first one and since I didn't know if they had gotten the notice in time to cancel it, I did pay that.  I got billed for the second one but I told them today that there was no way I was paying it.   The guy on the phone said that he took care of it.  It's only $36, but I won't pay it.

two more days of work and I'm taking a week off.  I can't wait!!!   Edith chose the week for her vacation, and I decided to take mine the same time.  She picked a great time.  It's the judges conference, the state bar meeting, the national immigration lawyers conference and more...so there's very little that will be happening at work.  Good time to take off.  I'm mostly going to stay home.

Well, not HOME, but in town.  I'm planning to do this tourist in your own town thing and go to 10 different tourist sites and get a stamp and you can win prizes.  It's mostly museums.  Most of them I haven't been to in a long time and it would be fun to go.  If I don't do them all, that's ok.

I'm also going to do a couple day trips and do some cleaning and sorting.  As always it's much more than I can do in a week, but that's ok. If I don't do any of it, it won't matter.

I'm watching the Dateline on the anniversary of the OJ chase.   I was in the finals of a Karaoke contest that night.  I didn't win and always wished I had stayed home and watched it

That trial did a lot for me and how I tried cases.  I became fascinated with the whole thing. It was that trial that led me to go to my first NACDL meeting to see Barry Scheck. I ended up joining and learned so much from the group.  I was later on the board.  It was a fabulous experience

As for the trial itself, I watched as much of it as I could.  It really wasn't tried very well at all.  I ended up reading 26 books about the case. I really learned a lot but I think the most important things were that the state clearly lost the case, they were way over confident and did some really stupid things.  They didn't put on evidence that they had and they made stupid decisions.  Marcia Clark thought black women would like her and relate to her so she wanted them on the jury.  Johnnie Cochrane told Chris Darden he was going to have OJ try on the gloves knowing Darden wouldn't want to be upstaged.  Sure enough Darden did it and of course leather that had been wet and tried was going to shrink.  Hello..

What I learned that helped me win trials was that there was one member of the "dream team" who worked tirelessly, studied the evidence over and over and was more prepared than anyone else....Barry Scheck.  He became my hero and I learned that the only way to win a trial is to know all the evidence better than anyone else in the courtroom. I started winning jury trials after that.  The other lawyers were OK, but made a ton of mistakes.  Some very basic ones. They may have been famous, but there's real doubt about whether they were a team

In the years following the trial, I met most of them.  I got to know Barry through the NACDL and my respect for him only grew.   I was lucky enough to meet Johnnie Cochran before he died.   Johnnie was inspiring, not about the OJ case but about Geronimo Pratt, who he spent his entire career trying to free.  He believed an innocent man had been convicted and eventually was able to get him released.
