We rented "The Amazing Spider-Man-2" to watch tonight.  I don't recall watching the 1st one.  I only remember the movies with Tobey Maguire.

Dearest DR TCB -

Hope that you have had a wonderful celebration today. This cake is to celebrate your birthday, and bk's show next summer, all in one:

Of course it's a crap shoot how long these pillows will last, DR Jeanne, but other kinds of pillows don't last all that long for me anyway and we're talking five bucks per gel-foam-whatever pillow, which is unheard of.  And since Costco is on the way to my rehearsal, I believe I just might stop in tomorrow morning for another set.

Oh, I think it's a real bargain. It's much harder to shop for pillows than for shoes. At least you can usually try on shoes for a 30-second test in the store, but how do you test-drive a pillow short of sleeping on it? It's a crap shoot. That said, I've been able to find uses for the pillows I've purchased that turned out to be disappointing. Your kitties may enjoy your new pillows even if you don't. When I sold my house several years ago the real estate agent asked me if I'd donate an eggcrate pad I no longer needed to the animal shelter for the arthritic dogs. (I did so.) Lots of uses.

Thanks for the reminder about blankets for the shelter.  I will be cleaning out closets soon and will probably have extra towels and blankets to donate there instead of to Goodwill.

DR Ginny, I'm glad you were able to switch to a blood thinner that doesn't require monitoring. Much easier! And the removal of dietary restrictions is just icing on the cake, so to speak. (Heart-healthy cake, of course!)

I do my best, DR Jeanne!

Richard, Mary Linda, and I went out to dinner and to do some errands while Rob works 4-midnight.  How nice to come back here and find that DR Dan M has returned!

I sent my sister home to Michigan with 2 large trash bags of bed linens for the ladies of her church.  They make them into bedrolls for the homeless.

I've been watching The Golden Ring about the events in August 1964 and John Culshaw's epic recording. I'd never seen it before, and i really loved it. Fischer-Dieskau is so damned young, already a bit pretentious, and I hear he got worse as he aged. Birgit Nillsn is fantastic, and I loved it when they brought the horse into the studio. Culshawwrte a book about the recording and I'd like to read it.  The orchestra is amazing, and there's Willy Boskovsky, who conducted so many operetta recordings and Strauss waltzes, as concert master!  I think there's a bok about the recording as well by Culshaw and I'd like to read it.

Well, I'm not one to talk.  I've had the Culshaw book for years, and haven't read it.

Since it's been several years since I watched the documentary, I'll do that soon, then dig the book out and get going.  These are incredible documents of mid-century recording splendor.

As soon as it started up, I realized it had been more years than I'd thought since seeing it last.  But I liked it, for the most part.

The scoring seemed very faithful to what I remembered of the Broadway score, but I'll have to take a look at it in the cold light of day.

The presence of Gwen Verdon is a gift.  Even if she was, of course, more a stage actress than a film one.  I found myself "translating" it from film to stage as it proceeded.  And I've always enjoyed Ray Walston.  I guess I like him in this because I've known no one else in the role.  (I didn't see Jerry Lewis do it, and the only other stage productions I'd ever seen were amateur ones.)  He's a bit weak in the "Good Old Days" number, but the rest seemed okay.

I have the re-issue of Solti's Ring, which contains both The Golden Ring documentary and the Culshaw book, amongst other eye-popping extras. Great stuff!

For awhile I had been telling myself that I really didn't belong here with everyone.

That's just crazy talk.

Starting to watch Last Vegas. Don't know if I'll make it all the way through. So many cliches in the first 10 minutes. But Joanna Gleason is in the supporting cast, so that's a plus.

We passed a street stand selling roasted corn ears earlier this evening. We stopped and bought a half dozen, and the corn has been cut off the cobbs. It will make a most tasty corn salad tomorrow.

I use a bundt pan for this. The ear fits nicely into the middle hole, and the pan collects the cut corn nicely and without fuss.
