Greetings from Toyland!  I had a major crisis when I got here, but I think all is relatively good now.

Quasi TOD:

Mr. BK raises an interesting if unintended TOD. What films have you seen that did a poor job of disguising the fact that they were not shot in the environs they allege their story to be set in?

I can think of many movies and TV shows that are supposed to be set in NY and have been obviously shot in Canada or L.A. with some very careless cover shots to give some illusion to sense of place.

It was a helluva trip home.  The City has blocked off Sixth Avenue for a bike marathon so that the buses are detoured and i could not pick it up to get home. I  took a tax to Eighth Avenue, but i didn't know where the bus srp was and missed the bus.  I had to wait 20 minutes for another, and of course the goddam bus stop has no bench for waiting.  It took me about an hour and fifteen minutes to get home and around 6:30 I have to head back to midtown for David Lutken's hootenanny.

Good afternoon!   I've been working on the yard the past couple days, getting it ready for summer.  Lawn furniture in place etc.  Today I planted a forsythia and some more hostas.  I also planted some seeds for flowers for the monarchs, as recommended by DR Laura.  Just before I planted them, I was in the back yard watering some plants and what popped out of the bushes.....a monarch!   I was so pleased. I made sure to plant the seeds right away.   It's supposed to rain off and on all week, so I wanted to get the plants in the ground and the seeds sown

I'm up, I'm up.  Got up at eleven, but just stayed in bed until thirty minutes ago.  So, not much time to kill before being on my way to The Federal - usually leave at three-thirty.

I'm so tired, I doubt I will be there long.  I've invited some of the PAINT YOUR WAGON cast that I think might be good possibilities for "Christmas Up The Holler."  I want to be there if any of them show, although i suspect they will know others there from other casts.

Another smoke filled day due to the controlled burns.   I won't miss these days.

I'm watching "The Dust Bowl" on PBS.  I've seen it in the past, but it's been awhile.  I love Ken Burns docs.

Look we had "Ken Burns" and "controlled burns" (aka Ken Burns's rarely mentioned brother who scratches 35mm film to make it have that vintage look).

The THIS channel just started about 19 mins. ago THE BOND FROM THE BEGINNING MARATHON. As many times as I have seen the Bond movies, I can't help but watch them even when I catch them somewhere in the middle. Not all are great. I stopped following them closely after Pierce Brosnan. I've seen the Daniel Craig ones. They're just not the same. I think they're more affixed to the 60s/70s. Roger Moore's began the trend toward cartoonish reliance on gadgets. Timothy Dalton was dreadfully unwitty. I just think there's now too much reliance on CGI that the charm of the earlier films is gone.

Much of the miniature work in the 1960s/70s Bonds was handled by workmen/craftsmen who had perfected miniature effects working on the Gerry Anderson Super-Marionation extravaganzas such as Stingray, Thunderbirds and Joe 90. CGI still can look very fake. Well-done miniatures done in proper scale may still not look that real but they are real in the sense that they really exist in space, and so that is captured by the camera.

I would rather have the controlled burns than the dust Burns was telling about.

Major Burns from a controlled burn or from M*A*S*H would not be any fun either.

I must have made my 1100 millstone yesterday.

[In Jack Benny's voice:] Oh George, would you please record my millstone? I know it's not major, but it's a round number, and I like round numbers.

  • A person should celebrate what passes by.

The Jerome Kern Facebook page says:

Quote
Jerome Kern was possibly the greatest melodicist who ever wrote popular songs.

Is melodicist a word?

No.
