Hmm, this new book ARMADA by Ernest Cline (which is way near the top of the best seller list) sounds plot-wise pretty much excatly like the film of THE LAST STARFIGHTER

Reading what's available from the novel online on Amazon. THE LAST STARFIGHTER (the film) is even mentioned in the first chapter of ARMADA (the novel).

TOD: I have season tickets to the tours here in town. I have suffered through a lot of crap. I forget it, usually while I am still watching it. I keep paying for the tickets in the hopes that they will have a really good season. Often they have a show or two worth seeing, but I'm not sure it is worth what I pay. I do enjoy the afternoons out with my daughter now that she is working about 15 hours a day.

So my mom turns on her computer last night and it "was acting weird"
