It's funny that Bruce has brought up this topic just now because I've been on a pretty severe diet since early June. I have lost 15 pounds and I'm getting lots of comments from everyone. No one noticed when I'd lost 10 pounds, but suddenly at 15 pounds, everyone notices! It's surprising and frustrating how slooowwwwly the weight comes off now at my age. I really need to start exercising, but with working seven days a week, who has time? Anyway, I tend to subscribe to the old FDA food pyramid which is eating more whole grains than anything else, then fruits and veggies, then meat, and very low fat and low sugar. It's the opposite of the popular low-carb diet, but the fact of the matter is that fat is 9 calories per gram and carbs are only 4 calories per gram. So, you can eat more food with carbs and get the same number of calories as less food with a higher fat content. Okay, if you're on a low-carb diet and eating nothing but fish and white meat chicken, you're okay, but some people on Atkins think they can eat all the fat they want, which is stupid. Anyway, one of the side of effects of this diet is that desserts that I used to love are now waaaay too sweet for me and I don't even want them, yay!
So I, too, am simply eating less...a lot less. But I think one trick that's helped me on this diet the most is that whenever I get a hunger pang, I drink three big gulps of water and then see if the pang subsides. Usually it does because so often when we think we're hungry, we're actually thirsty. And if I'm craving fruit or a milkshake, I'm definitely thirsty. I have five more pounds to lose as I'm trying to fit into a dress I really love that I haven't worn in a few years.
Mark is doing well on his diet too, but annoyingly, he refuses to weigh himself. I think he looks a little thinner though. We stopped eating out every Saturday and Sunday night, which I think has helped a lot. Our credit card bill has gone way down too, which is nice.
